A photo has been released from Johnny Depp's first film role since his trial with Amber Heard.

The couple were involved in a drawn out legal battle earlier this year, when Depp sued his ex-wife over an article she wrote back in 2018 about being a victim of domestic abuse.

Though she didn't name Depp in the piece, the Pirates of The Caribbean star said it was clearly a reference to him and caused him to lose millions in pay from potential movie deals.

He sued Heard for $50 million, while she countersued him for $100m.

Depp was awarded over $10m by the jury at the Virginia trial, while Heard was awarded $2m.

Since then, the 59-year-old has been on tour with rock legend Jeff Beck and is currently filming a movie in France, called Jeanne du Barry.

And the first image of the actor in the role of King Louis XV has now been released.

In the pic, Depp is seen wearing period make up, with his eyes covered by a blindfold.

Louis XV reigned over France for 59 years, but was accused of corruption and debauchery towards the end of his rule and died unpopular.

The film is directed by Maiwenn, who will star as Louis XV’s last mistress, Jeanne du Barry.

A synopsis for the film says: "The life of Jeanne Bécu who was born as the illegitimate daughter of an impoverished seamstress in 1743 and went on to rise through the Court of Louis XV to become his last official mistress."

Why Not Productions told Deadline that filming began on 26 July, and is set to run for 11 weeks.

As well as the studio, shooting has taken place at the Palace of Versailles and other chateaux in Paris and Île-de-France.

Depp was awarded over $10m in his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

But while fans will be seeing the star portray the French ruler, one role they won't be seeing him take on anytime soon is that of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Depp recently appeared to confirm he doesn't plan on returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise ever again.

His representative denied rumours flying around that the actor will be making a comeback, describing them as ‘made up’ to NBC.

Depp’s rep’s comments were referring to an article published on Pop Topic that claimed Disney was ‘hopeful’ Depp would return to the role and had been offered $301 million to do so.

He last played Jack Sparrow in 2017 for Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, and has become the face of the blockbuster franchise.

However, there are two more Pirates movies - one of which will reportedly star Margot Robbie - in the works, and the 59-year-old actor is attached to neither of them.
