Giancarlo Esposito Is Open To Doing A Breaking Bad Spin Off TV Series About Gus Fring

Esposito said that while shooting the final episodes of Better Call Saul, Vince Gilligan hinted at a potential spin-off show for Gus.

Giancarlo Esposito has confirmed he’s eager for a Breaking Bad spin-off series about Gus Fring.

The 63-year-old actor who played the cool, calm and terrifying drug lord in Breaking Bad will reprise his role in the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul.

However, the star isn’t ready to say goodbye to Fring just yet, as he revealed to Insider he’s open to a prequel series that would follow the restaurateur turned drug kingpin.

The actor said he was particularly emotional during his final days on the Better Call Saul set, but said it was one of the show’s creators, Vince Gilligan, who hinted at a potential spin-off show.

He said: “The last days [on set of Better Call Saul], I'm tearing up and looking over my shoulder and I hear Vince say, 'You never know.' And so, I've always wanted, and felt like, there's room for material for the rise of Gus.”

Esposito also acknowledged that while there are many unanswered questions about Fring’s life, a new series would provide a backstory to the character, delving into his past life and affluent upbringing.

“I feel like it'd be interesting to know where he came from. I feel like he came from a really wealthy family, had the opportunity to run, not only the family, but government in another country," he said.

“He had that kind of brain, that charisma, that stature, and he traded it in because he wanted to be his own man. There's something fascinating to me about that.

“I would consider and think about that particular scenario because I think it's another moral tale that allows us to view into humanity and into how we push our humanity aside and to be demonstrative and to say who we are and we lose everything in the process, because we know where Gus ends. We don't know where he began.”

However, between filming season four of The Boys and season three of The Mandalorian, Esposito might not have time to work on a spin-off show for a while.

According to MovieWeb, the show’s creators, Gilligan and Peter Gould, also confirmed they would like to expand the Breaking Bad universe; but now might not be the right time.

“I love these characters, I love this world. Maybe someday, but personally I’m going to take a little break from that world and try something else, just to prove that I can," Gould said.

Until then, you can catch the final season of Better Call Saul on April 18 on AMC.
