While speaking with Variety, the actor disclosed her drastic physical transformation for the upcoming film.
She explained the outlet: "On Black Swan, I was asked to get as small as possible.
"Here, I was asked to get as big as possible. That’s an amazing challenge — and also state of mind as a woman.”
E! News reports when Portman starred in the psychological thriller, she weighed merely 98 pounds (44.4 kg or 1568 ounces), a significant difference while reprising the role of Jane Foster.
If you’ve recently seen photos of the 41-year-old actor on the set, you’ll know that she’s looking a lot more stocky than usual, giving Chris Hemsworth a run for his money.
The Star Wars actor also noted how her physicality altered how she carried herself.
“To have this reaction and be seen as big, you realise, ‘Oh, this must be so different, to walk through the world like this,’” she said.
“When you’re small — and also, I think, because I started as a kid — a lot of times I feel young or little or, like, a pat-on-the-head kind of person. And I present myself that way, too, because of that.”
The last time Portman appeared in a Marvel flick was 2013’s Thor: The Dark World.
But now, she’ll once again step into the shoes of the astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-lover, who becomes Mighty Thor will be when she gains her new superhero abilities.
While speaking to Empire Magazine, the film’s director Taika Waititi also teased that having Foster show up with superpowers would be a real ‘mind f**k’ for Hemsworth's character if they gave Mighty Thor a similar costume.
“It’s been about eight years,” he said.
“She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mindf**k for Thor.”
The New Zealand national treasure spoke of how he wanted to bring Portman back to the franchise, but wished to reinvent her character completely.
He said: “You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment.
“You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure," he said.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be theatrically released on July 8.
