Great news for fans of Luther, as the teaser trailer for the anticipated feature film just dropped:

Luther: The Fallen Sun is set to release on 24 February, followed by a Netflix release on 10 March.

Per the official synopsis: "In Luther: The Fallen Sun - an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film - a gruesome serial killer is terrorising London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars.

"Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary."

The flick is also set to see Detective John Luther leave his usual London backdrop and go further afield.

First look shots shared last month showed at least one location will feature plenty of snow.

Speaking to Empire about the project, Elba said: "We really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that.

"It also gives Neil [Cross, Luther’s creator] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.

"We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit. And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience."

The actor continued: "It’s really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show.

"I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, [we don’t] distort the parameters of Luther-land too much.

"We do amplify the action and do amplify the stakes. But [season three’s] man-under-the-bed moment? That don’t cost you much money. Those moments are still intact."

The 50-year-old actor will be appearing in the movie alongside the likes of Genius star Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis of Lord of the Rings fame.

Fans can't wait for Luther's big screen debut.

Back in September, Elba spoke with LADbible about some exciting developments for the anticipated Netflix flick, saying it will 'open the doors' for the long-running crime thriller series.

And while it will stay true to the five-season show on which it's based, it will also be a story in its own right.

"The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it's nearly there," he told us. We're really proud of it."

When asked if there are any unexpected returning characters, of course Idris wasn't allowed to say.

But he did share an exciting little tidbit, stating: "The world of Luther as a television show and film is similar, but the film has [huge] scale.

"We're opening the doors and widening it so anything's possible when you can do that."
