The Met Gala red carpet is being absolutely roasted online after being unveiled for this year’s star-studded event, having reminded people of everything from toothpaste to the TikTok logo.
The annual fundraising gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is famous for guests’ red carpet arrival, where they’re expected to go all out.
This year’s theme is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, serving as an ode to the late German fashion designer who passed away in February 2019.

But while the event is known for its glitz and glamour, many people weren’t massively impressed by the red carpet, which was in fact a cream with a red and blue line design – a colour combo that left some people thinking about brushing their teeth.
“I was excited for the Met Gala but the red carpet looks like toothpaste,” one tweeted.
Someone else said: “It’s giving Colgate Triple Action Deep Clean Toothpaste. #MetGala.”

Another quipped: “When you leave the lid off the toothpaste.”
A fourth added: “Why have they made this look like Aquafresh toothpaste?”
Naturally, it didn’t take long for someone to turn it into 'Jason Derulo has fallen down the stairs’ meme, writing: “BREAKING NEWS: Jason Derulo has slipped on toothpaste and fallen down the stairs at the 2023 #MetGala.”

Someone else had the same idea, but with Timothee Chalamet.
While others didn’t think the red carpet necessarily looked like toothpaste, many agreed it wasn’t exactly giving high fashion.
“Met Gala carpet reminds me of an ice rink,” one person said.

Another wrote: “The Get gala red carpet looks kinda like an 80s bowling alley or something...”
A third said: “The red carpet looks like the f**king TikTok logo.”
With this year's theme a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, many of his famous friends have taken the occasion to honour the late fashion icon.
Vogue editor-in-chief, Dame Anna Wintour, said the event would be 'a very emotional night' for her as she paid tribute to her friend Karl Lagerfeld.

Speaking to Vogue on the red carpet, she said: “It’s a very emotional night for me.
“I love Karl so much and it’s just wonderful to see so many people who are turning out to honour him, and give him the recognition that he so deserves.
“Karl was just was so creative, so visionary… (he) invented so many things and at the same time I think was intrinsically the chicest designer that you can ever imagine.”
