Zendaya finally dispels longstanding Met Gala rumour with shocking outfit

The Spider-Man star stunned on the blue carpet, as did Anna Sawai, who sported a near-identical suit

No, you weren't seeing double - Zendaya and Anna Sawai did turn up to the Met Gala in a near-identical looks.

The pair both stunned on the blue carpet outside of New York's Metropolitan Museum on Monday (5 May), even if it did appear that both of their tailored ensembles had been cut from the same cloth.

And according to social media users, the stars unintentionally twinning is hard evidence that a longstanding rumour about the annual fashion event is actually a load of rubbish.

Spider-Man star Zendaya smashed this year's theme, which was 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style', celebrating the legacy of Black dandyism with the 'Tailored for You' dress code.

The actress, 28, looked dressed to kill in a custom Louis Vuitton white tailored suit, designed by music mogul and the luxury brand's Men's Creative Director, Pharrell Williams.

She sported a corresponding single-breasted tuxedo, waistcoat, silk shirt and tie with flared trousers, while accessorising with a wide-brimmed floppy hat.

Anna Sawai was apparently working off a similar mood board as Zendaya, as the Japanese screen star and singer donned a very similar look for the 2025 Met Gala.

Dressed in Dior, the Shōgun star wore a white wool and silk jacket, paired with matching trousers, a prominent tie and a white poplin shirt.

She complemented her clean look with a white brimmed hat, just like Zendaya, as well as a pair of white gloves.

There were obviously some subtle differences between both their outfits, but Met attendees might have struggled to differentiate Zendaya and Sawai from behind after a few bevvies.

Both of them looked incredible, but in the fashion world, wearing an almost-identical outfit to someone else - especially to an event like the Met - is generally considered a faux pas.

Which is why people are now certain that Anna Wintour doesn't pre-approve looks for attendees before they hit the blue carpet, as they reckon Vogue's editor-in-chief would never sign off on Zendaya and Sawai wearing such similar suits.

Wintour herself confirmed she does not green light the attire of A-listers for the Met during an interview with Good Morning America ahead of this year's event.

"Many call and ask our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can," she explained. "Some, no idea."

Despite those words coming straight from Wintour's mouth, there was a host of skeptics who said they still suspected that the Brit fashion guru pulls the strings from behind the scenes.

However, it seems Zendaya and Sawai turning up looking like two peas in a pod might finally put the rumours to bed - even if there are a few people who still need convincing that the outfits of attendees aren't Wintour's call.

Others called for the Vogue boss to start approving the attire of attendees to avoid a similar situation next year.

One person said: "It's even funnier that this happens now when the theme is 'Tailored for You'."

Another speculated: "She DOES approve every outfit. She gives notes. She and her team KNEW this was going to happen."

A third added: "Why's everyone matching? Maybe Anna Wintour should actually approve the outfits next year."

A fourth wrote: "To be fair, normally men wear a ton of nearly matching suits and no one notices. They look great."

And a fifth chimed in saying: "Or, Wintour approved both of them so people would disapprove the rumour..."

It's seems there is no hard feelings between the stylists responsible for the similar looks, as Karla Welch, who dressed Sawai, shared an Instagram Story tagging Zendaya's stylist Law Roach saying: "Great minds," alongside a heart emoji.
