Man who discovered body in search for TV doctor Michael Mosley speaks out after heartbreaking incident

He spotted a body, which is now being taken for identification

The man who discovered the body of Michael Mosley after he had been missing for several days on the Greek island of Symi has spoken out.

The TV doctor, who appeared on the likes of This Morning and The One Show, had gone missing on Wednesday (5 June) after saying he would be walking home from a beach but never arriving.

Mosley had set off at around 1:30pm local time but six hours later his wife reported him missing as he still hadn't returned.

Sadly, a body was found during the search effort for the doctor and senior police official Petros Vassilakis confirmed 'it's him'.

The body is being taken to Rhodes for formal identification.

According to Sky News, the body was found about 10 metres from the sea near a cave complex located by Agia Marina beach.

Symi's mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas told Sky that he had been in a boat on the way to search the caves when someone on board had spotted the body.

The body was discovered by Antonios Mystiloglou, a cameraman working for TV ERT who was on a boat with the mayor when he spotted something.

He said: "When we went up to the Marina beach I noticed outside of the fence at the end of the beach something black.

"I wasn't sure so I took a close-up with the camera, as far as it can zoom, it was about 300 metres away.

"I saw something, I wasn't sure, I talked to the mayor as he was sitting next to me. He said 'ok, we'll come back, we will check again'.

"We did, we were a little bit closer, about 200 metres, I also took the shot again but through the camera you find it's too small, I wasn't sure.

"We decided once we come to the café again we'd play back the footage, we took a photo of the screen with an iPhone, we zoomed it in and you can clearly see there's a man lying down with his hand on his belly.

"On his other hand he has his bag, the description is exactly as the guy we're looking for. I'm really sorry for the family, I'm sorry that I am the one to find him."

The mayor said that the body appeared to have fallen down a steep slope, and had some rocks on top.

The cameraman Mystiloglou said he saw a leather bag held in one of the body's hands, while an umbrella was also found nearby.

CCTV footage of Mosley's final confirmed moments showed him walking past a restaurant with an umbrella.
