Netflix add ‘gripping’ Irish murder mystery thriller ‘from the perspective of the killer’ that can be binged in one weekend

The murder mystery has a fascinating concept

Clear out your weekend, Netflix have added a new Irish crime murder mystery thriller, and if you’re a TV-obsessed loon like me – it sounds a perfect treat to binge in one sitting.

This weekend is a competitive for our attentions, with Paddington in Peru coming to the cinema, Netflix adding Bank Under Siege – a Money Heist style true story drama, and the inevitable backlog of 100 shows we are all behind on.

If you’re like me though, any Irish drama will automatically jump several spots up the list, and the one Netflix added this week is no exception.

It has jumped straight to number four in the charts in the UK, and third in Ireland after being added to the streamer.

One part that is a particularly enticing hook about the series? The killer is our protagonist.

Check out the trailer here:

The show is called Clean Sweep and don’t worry, I didn’t spoil it for you by saying the killer is the lead.

The show, starring Charlene McKenna, Barry Ward, and Jeanne Nicole Ní Áinle, focuses on a stay-at-home mum who is married to a detective.

He is then put on the case of a murder that she committed after her past comes back to haunt her.

Clean Sweep is not a who-dunnit as much as a why-dunnit.

The show, produced by RTE, is also available on iPlayer, but has been added to Netflix in the UK and Ireland.

It received a 67 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, has an average score of 6.5 on IMDb, and it is said to have been inspired partially by a real-life murder.

Michael Starr of the New York Post said in his positive review: “It offers a compelling, elaborate-puzzle murder mystery that will keep you guessing all the way through to the end of its sixth and final episode.”

Meanwhile, one 8/10 review on IMDb said: “I thought it was a very good show with a complex plot and complex family relationships.

“I thought the main character was excellent. We grew to know and love her and her children.

“We were invited into a real family, doing believable things. I cared for the characters.

“At several points when you feel the crime is about to be solved, they wriggle out of it but always in a believable way, easing the tension momentarily but not for long.”

While another review called the drama 'gripping' and 'well-acted', adding: "I thought the ending was well-executed."

Ty’Kira Smalls of Common Sense Media said in their four star review: “This series will sweep viewers out of their chairs with twists and thrills.

“Clean Sweep is filled with grit and mystery that will keep viewers on edge and not knowing who to believe or what's true.”

Clean Sweep is available to watch on Netflix now.
