Whilst there are plenty of disturbing documentaries on Netflix, its latest feature might put you off your dinner – literally!

The new film, called Poisoned, investigates the US food industry and uncovers plenty of stomach-churning secrets along the way.

In fact, it’s made some viewers feel so queasy that they’ve vowed to go vegan after watching the unpalatable doc (Carnivores, look away now!).

For those who still think the Netflix documentary is their cup of tea, here is a brief synopsis of Poisoned.

The Netflix film looks at how pathogens affect the food industry.

It follows filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig as she investigates how the US food industry manages foodborne pathogens, such as E.Coli.

Tragically, the often-overlooked bacteria can have fatal consequences for consumers, as the documentary maker discovers.

The film can be hard to stomach at times as it’s based on Jeff Benedict’s hard-hitting book, Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat.

In fact, the streaming giant even goes into detail about the various cover-ups and criminal prosecutions occurring because of the food industry.

The synopsis even poses the question: “Our policymakers and food industry execs have been unrelenting in suggesting America’s food is “the safest in the world,” but how can they protect us when it isn’t?"

Though it was only released earlier this week (2 August), the hard-hitting documentary has given many viewers food for thought.

The hard hitting doc is turning many viewers vegan.

Some have even gone vegan after finding the documentary hard to digest.

Taking their concerns to Twitter, one wrote: "Just watched Poisoned on Netflix. Thinking imma go vegan boy was I wrong."

Another agreed, writing: "This Poisoned documentary on Netflix makes me wanna turn vegan."

Others were even uncomfortable tucking into vegetables after watching Poisoned for the first time.

A third wrote: “Never eating romaine or bagged lettuce again after watching the documentary Poisoned on Netflix."

Meanwhile, a fourth quipped: "This'll kick the diet into the next gear, just don't eat anything at all.”

It’s not the first time Netflix has made people lose their lunch, though, with the streaming giant also airing Rotten back in 2018.

The series looked into the not-so-savoury truth about the global food chain, even documenting how cartels have become involved in the lucrative avocado trade.

Running for two seasons, there is a lot to tuck into in the Netflix series, but we suggest you do that after you’ve had your dinner.

Poisoned and Rotten are both available to stream on Netflix.
