Netflix users in disbelief over 'outrageous' new documentary leaving their 'jaws on the floor'

The show saw contestants competing to lose weight in order to win money

Viewers have been left in disbelief over a new Netflix series which lifts the lid on one of America's most notorious weight loss reality shows.

Airing for 18 seasons from 2004 to 2016, The Biggest Loser saw overweight and obese people competing to lose weight in order to win cash. The show would see contestants weighed in-front of a studio audience, pushed so hard in challenges they vomited and pushed to their physical limits.

For the one lucky contestant who came out on top, a prize of $250,000 (£187,000).

Close to a decade on from the series going off air and The Biggest Loser hasn't aged well, with Netflix's latest documentary, Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser, exposing the darkest parts of the NBC show.

Check out the trailer below:

Fit for TV is currently listed as 'number one' in its Top 10 of most watched shows in the UK today and has received a strong reaction among viewers.

The three-part docuseries features interviews with show trainer Bob Harper, medical expert Dr Robert Huizenga, host Alison Sweeney and several former contestants - who had both positive and negative experiences on The Biggest Loser.

Netflix subscribers have been quick to share their thoughts online about the more 'outrageous' revelations in the doc, including the fact that one challenge saw a contestant suffer a near-death experience.

"I am watching fit for tv the reality of the biggest loser on Netflix. They were barely eating, excersing [sic] for 8+ hours a day. Bob and Jillian were crazy," read one review on X.

"1 contestant almost died, and Jillian and Bob were pissed she was listening to the doctor instead of exercising. SHE ALMOST DIED!"

"I used to watch the Biggest Loser with my mom growing up. It's so crazy seeing it from this side. Making overweight and not active people burn 6,000+ calories a day is INSANE," added a second viewer.

A TikTok user commented: "Throughout the entire series my jaw was on the floor, I was in a red hot rage."

Meanwhile, one Reddit thread focused on how the show appeared to prioritise making 'good TV' over promoting healthy weight-loss.

"That’s not the most efficient way to lose weight, it’s just unnecessarily brutal and makes 'good TV'. In reality, simply eating less would make the biggest difference, but that’s not fun to watch," commented one viewer, while a second added: "Americans want to gamify weight loss when in reality long term results only come from continuous effort. Even then, thin shouldn't be an expectation for everyone."

LADbible Group has contacted NBC for comment.
