Viewers have been left unable to sleep after watching Netflix horror series The Fall of the House of Usher.

The new series comes from Mike Flanagan, the director of the scary movies Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Gerald's Game, as well as the popular Netflix shows The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Midnight Club - so it’s not like viewers didn’t know what they were letting themselves in for when they tuned in.

The Fall of the House of Usher is Flanagan’s take on Edgar Allan Poe’s 1839 short story of the same name - but much like we saw with The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan has added his own ‘fresh, freaky twist on it’.

A synopsis from Netflix explains: “Roderick Usher (played by Bruce Greenwood), the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company, who must face his shady past when each of his children begins to die in mysterious and brutal fashion.”

The Fall of the House of Usher has a host of familiar faces from Flanagan’s previous projects, including Annabeth Gish, Kate Siegel, Bruce Greenwood, Carl Lumbly, Henry Thomas, Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, Robert Longstreet and Samantha Sloyan, while Mark Hamill also joins the cast.

The Fall of the House of Usher landed on Netflix this week.

The series landed on Netflix on Thursday (12 October) and debuted with a near-perfect 95 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

And fans have flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to praise the ‘gory’ and ‘disturbing show’.

One viewer said: “Started The Fall of the House of Usher tonight and now I have to try to sleep after the ending of episode three. Mike Flanagan doesn't miss.”

Another said: “Wow. The Fall of the House of Usher was really good. Very disturbing and quite gory, but good. I’m going to be thinking about it for a long time.”

Horror fans have heaped praise on the series.

'Decadently gruesome' is certainly one way of putting it.

A third said: “Welp, The Fall of the House of Usher does not disappoint. I just finished episode two. A bit of a deviation from the original story, but aren't all films and shows, really? Mike Flanagan is a cinematic genius, and I haven't even gone to bed yet but I already can't sleep.”

Someone else wrote: “The new The Fall of the House of Usher series on Netflix is v.good so far, by the way. Another Mike Flanagan creation, so if you liked Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor and Midnight Mass you'll probably like this. Fyi only two episodes in and it's quite gory and graphic. Be warned.”

The Fall of the House of Usher is available to stream on Netflix right now.
