Netflix fans praise ‘hidden gem’ series that’s ‘better than Game of Thrones’

Netflix viewers can't wait to rewatch the historical drama series.

Netflix fans are making a big claim by hyping up a 'hidden gem' they believe is ‘better than Game of Thrones’.

Game of Thrones is, of course, the on-screen version of George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.

The US fantasy drama depicts the lives of two powerful families, kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men, who are all playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

Airing from 2011 to 2019, GoT remains HBO's most-watched series, whilst picking up 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most by a drama series.

It starred Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Aidan Gillen, to name a few.

However, it seems that Netflix users are comparing the show with a pirate adventure series, which is 'better' than GoT, they claim.

Titled Black Sails, the series was a prequel to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel, 'Treasure Island'.

The STARZ show 'centers on the tales of Captain Flint, who has a reputation throughout the West Indies as being the most brilliant, most feared of all the Golden Age pirates'.

"It's 1715, and as Flint fights for the survival of New Providence Island - a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers - in the wake of threats from British and Spanish forces, he aligns himself with Eleanor Guthrie, daughter of the local kingpin, to hunt the ultimate prize and ensure his people's survival," reads the synopsis.

"But standing in the way are rival captains, Eleanor's intrusive father, and perhaps the bigger obstacle of all: John Silver, a young, fast-talking, authority-flouting sailor recently added to Flint's crew."

Black Sails, which aired from 2013 to 2017, starred the likes of Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tom Hopper.

Although it only lasted four seasons - compared with GoT's eight - Netflix viewers are saying it's 'better than Game of Thrones at times'.

With it set to arrive on UK Netflix next year, one fan tweeted: "Black Sails is finally on Netflix and if you haven't seen it it's better than Game of Thrones, it's a proper 10/10 show."

"I'll never stop recommending Black Sails. It's basically Game of Thrones but with pirates," a second added.

Another said: "At its best its way better than average GoT episode, but the best GoT eps are better.

"The large budget difference and broader cast helps keep GOT better on average but BS has its own strengths.

"It also truly wears its 'no heroes' badge well, with everyone really out for themselves, whereas GoT morphed into a good vs evil eventually."

Black Sails will be coming to UK Netflix on 1 January.
