The show is heartbreaking

A new Scandinavian Netflix thriller which viewers are calling the ‘best in years’ has dropped, and it's inspired by a horrifying true story.

Fans have called it ‘gripping’ and the series has a more than impressive IMDb score, emblematic of its successful role out on the streamer.

The series is a Swedish show, an area of the world which somehow seems to consistently produce all the best crime series and thrillers.

The series is based on a non-fiction book called The Breakthrough: How The Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping.

Following its release the show has shot straight to the top of Netflix’s charts in the UK, landing at number five.

The show is called The Breakthrough, named after the book in a snappier fashion. Check out the trailer:

The true crime series is sitting pretty with a 7.3 on IMDb at the time of writing, and viewers have been raving about it.

One tweeted: “Breakthrough on Netflix btw, very good, those scandies really know what they’re doing when it comes to telly," as another said: “The breakthrough netflix was truly riveting”.

One 10/10 review on IMDb called the show 'deeply touching'.

They went on to say: “This miniseries has been crafted with high sensibility, the characters are developed in perfect way and all the actors do an amazing job.

“It's an immersive experience, that lead to feel the pain of the parents, the struggling and the weight of responsibility that investigators have. The movement thru the years, that often is the most difficult part on this kind of movie, it's smooth.

“Impressive work also from the makeup department. Characters are fully believable in all the years of their life. Impressive performance from the lead actor.”

Some, however, are saying it’s so heartbreaking they are struggling to even watch it.

One viewer tweeted: “#TheBreakthrough on #Netflix is too sad and painful to watch. Just 5mins into episode 1 and my heart broke into pieces because how can this be a true story? I’ve only managed to complete 31mins in the past 80 minutes”.

The horrifying story is, unfortunately, indeed inspired by a true story.

The Breakthrough is a fictionalised account of real crimes that occurred, with names changed and creative liberties taken.

In 2004, Sweden was rocked after the brutal murders of Anna-Lena Svensson, 56, and Mohammed Ammouri, 8.

Ammouri was attacked on his way to school, with Svensson witnessing this and trying to intervene. Both were killed, and it took investigators 16 years to solve their murders.

The Breakthrough is on Netflix now.
