Netflix release thriller deemed ‘modern day Rambo' with near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score

Netflix have released a new thriller which is going to be your perfect next Friday night watch.

The film, released today on the streamer, is a thriller which has been getting absolutely exceptional reviews.

It may not be from a director you’ve heard of like Christopher Nolan, it may not have some stacked cast full of megastars, and it may not be based on an existing idea... but none of that is stopping it from being one of the best reviewed films of the summer.

With a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 98 percent, there is only one single negative review on the platform (and we can just ignore that person I reckon).

Add to that, people are calling the Netflix film a ‘modern day Rambo’, and these are simply recommendations you cannot ignore.

Check out the trailer here and see what you think:

The film, called Rebel Ridge, is the latest from director Jeremy Saulnier.

The American filmmaker, who previously directed the vastly underrated film Green Room, returns with the Netflix thriller.

Rebel Ridge follows an ex-marine put on a path of vengeance following a run-in with corrupt cops when trying to post bail for his cousin.

Whilst the concept itself is simple enough, the trailer is so evidently full of sauce you can see why people are dying to see the film.

The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee gave the film four stars, discussing the differing strands of social drama and western-style action thriller.

He said: “What’s so remarkable is just how committed and accomplished Saulnier is at caring for each strand equally, a full-body workout for us as viewers, pulses racing and brains engaged, a two-hour plus saga that keeps us totally enthralled at every second.”

IGN called the film a ‘Rambo for 2024’ in their review, saying: “The finale of Rebel Ridge is a chaotic blaze of crossfire, and enormously satisfying for it.

“It’s what a modern crowd-pleaser should be: smart, gripping, and about something.”

The film stars Aaron Pierre as the ex-marine Terry Richmond, whilst Don Johnson stars as crooked police Chief Sandy.

Whilst Pierre has received plaudits across the board for his performance, John Boyega was initially set to star in the film.

Despite this, Daniel Joyaux of Indiewire said: “John Boyega was originally cast as Terry, but Pierre makes the role so thoroughly his own that it’s difficult to imagine anyone else pulling it off. He commands the screen with a handsome authority.”

In short, drop what you’re doing, rush to the sofa, and whack on this accomplished thriller.
