Two new seasons of Peaky Blinders confirmed as plot revealed

Netflix and the BBC confirmed the news today

Netflix has confirmed a two-season order for a Peaky Blinders follow-up series by Steven Knight.

Knight, who created Peaky Blinders, is one of the busiest men in Hollywood, having been confirmed earlier this year to be writing the next James Bond film set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve.

In addition to this the writer is also behind Netflix’s newest hit show, House of Guinness, which released last week and has been dominating the Netflix charts since.

The news that Peaky Blinders is getting a follow-up series comes in addition to the upcoming Netflix movie that will see the return of Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby.

Netflix will air the show globally with it appearing on the BBC in the UK.

Steven Knight, speaking about the new follow-up show, said: “I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story.

“Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz.

“The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”

Cillian Murphy has been confirmed to be an Executive Producer on the show as well as returning to the character for an upcoming film on Netflix The Immortal Man.

Speaking exclusively to LADbible last month, Murphy spoke about how he had played the role of Tommy Shelby for 'a quarter of his life'.

He said: "With Peaky, it was like 12 years of my life, which I worked out as like a quarter of my life.

“So you get to work very closely with Steve – Steven Knight who wrote the script – so he’s writing for the character, but also for me.”

The actor spoke about how he had been in the role so long he had been able to explore 'young man into middle age, into sort of an older man’.

The synopsis of the follow-up series was also confirmed, which reads: “Britain, 1953. After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel.

“In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions.

“This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”

Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said of the upcoming series: “This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBC’s most-loved dramas.

“Steven has worked his magic once again and I can’t wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham.

“We are delighted to be working with Kudos, Garrison Drama and Netflix on this epic show.

“There’s plenty of drama for Peaky fans to look forward to!”
