Django Unchained is a gory film, even by Quentin Tarantino's standards - but did you know that some of the blood in the movie was real?

During one memorable scene, Leonardo DiCaprio slammed his hand on a glass and cut it open, and like a true pro, kept going until they'd wrapped the scene.

Watch DiCaprio recall what went down here:

DiCaprio plays odious slave owner Calvin Candie in the 2012 film, and in a scene with Jamie Foxx - who plays Django Freeman - and Christoph Waltz - who plays Dr King Schultz - the Wolf of Wall Street actor slammed his hand on a table, inadvertently cutting his hand on a glass.

You'd think with a sudden sharp shoot of pain like this you would break character and quickly seek medical assistance, but the 48-year-old managed to channel the pain through Candie's wrath, not even flinching as he opened his palm and saw the blood gushing out.

Speaking to ABC News, he said: "That was the fun part, watching their reactions.

"Boom it happened, and then I opened my hand and then blood starts pouring everywhere, and I saw Jamie go like this [makes shocked face]."

Meanwhile, director Tarantino was also alarmed - but not enough to call cut.

DiCaprio had already lost his voice a couple of times shooting the scene, escalating to external damage on about the sixth take, when he bust his hand open on the glass.

"My hand started really pouring blood all over the table," DiCaprio recalled in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"Maybe they thought it was done with special effects. I wanted to keep going.

"It was more interesting to watch Quentin's and Jamie's reaction off-camera than to look at my hand."

When Tarantino finally called cut, the room erupted in a standing ovation.

"We did it bloodied and bandaged for the rest of the movie," DiCaprio added.

"I'm glad Quentin kept it in."

This wasn't the only injury on the set of the violent movie either, as Waltz dislocated his pelvis after he was thrown from a horse during training.

"Well, I fell off," he told E! News. "Our stunt coordinator said in a rodeo, it would be an 86.5. I don't know what that means."

Luckily, the Inglourious Basterds star made a speedy recovery and was still able to take part in the film.
