Robert Pattinson Says It's No Longer 'Cool' To Hate Twilight

The topic of Pattinson’s earlier career came up when he was promoting The Batman with Zoe Kravitz

Robert Pattinson has said it’s no longer ‘cool’ to hate on the Twilight franchise, joking how it’s ‘so 2010’.

Pattinson’s first major film role may have been his turn as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but there’s no denying that it was The Twilight Saga that truly broke him into Hollywood and helped him become a household name.

He starred in all five films – based on the book series by Stephenie Meyer – as Edward Cullen, a 108-year-old vampire who falls in love with the human protagonist Bella Swan.

Audiences became obsessed with the unusual romance, and the franchise became a huge favourite among teenagers growing up in the late 2000s and early 2010s, although critically the movies generally garnered average reviews at best.

But now Pattinson is sticking up for himself – and his sparkling vampire alter-ego – having said it’s simply not cool to be a hater anymore.

While promoting The Batman with co-star Zoe Kravitz, the topic of Pattinson’s earlier career came up.

In an interview with People, Kravitz admitted that she’d never watched Twilight, but Pattinson wasn’t having any of it.

“Yeah right,” he said, before continuing: “It’s not even cool to be a hater anymore... That’s so 2010.”

Kravitz tried to explain herself, telling Pattinson: “I don’t hate it... I just didn’t see it, I just didn’t participate in it.”

Stumbling over her words for an explanation, she then suddenly interrupted herself and said: “That’s not true! I saw the first one because my best friend Sky... She kind of made me go.

“So I don’t really remember it, but...”

Shaking his head in faux outrage, Pattinson said to his co-star: “There’s a lot of experiences involving me you just completely erased.”

Many people gawked at the idea of Edward Cullen beating up baddies in Gotham City in The Batman.

But director Matt Reeves recently revealed he actually wrote his version of Batman specifically for Pattinson, having examined the actor's previous work.

"From the beginning, I was imagining the character in my head," Reeves, who co-wrote the script with Peter Craig, told Movie Maker.

"I watched movies of actors in the age range and he really captivated me. I started writing for him. I had no idea if he'd ever want to be in the movie."

The Batman is out in cinemas on 4 March.
