Michael C Hall Admits Dexter Ending Was ‘Infuriating’ For Fans

The ending was so unpopular the show's creators are shooting a new season

Michael C Hall has admitted that the ending of Dexter was 'infuriating' for fans.

But the actor, who stars as the titular character, is hoping to rectify the situation with the 10-episode limited series that's due to air later this winter.

Dexter first hit our screens back in 2006 and originally ran for eight seasons.

It centred on forensic scientist Dexter Morgan, who also happened to be a vigilante serial killer, who spent his time taking out the bad guys.

The show was hugely popular with audiences and critics, but many were left feeling disappointed when the show bowed out in 2013.

In fact, the ending was so unpopular, the show's creators decided to make a new 'final' season to wrap things up - with Hall set to reprise the role of Dexter.

In an interview with Phil Williams on Times Radio, 50-year-old Hall said he was behind the idea for the original finale but agreed it wasn't executed very well.

When asked how it felt to film the new season, he said it had been 'gratifying', adding: "I think the show ended in a way that was pretty mystifying at best, if not infuriating for people.

"But that at least set the stage for us to return and answer more definitively what the hell happened to this guy.

"I totally support what happened, the choice he makes at the end, but as far as the execution goes, we were all running on vapour at that point, so I get it."

The new season doesn't pick up where the last one ended, however. Dexter - who we last saw taking up a new life as a lumberjack - will have gone through the same passage of time as the audience.

Hall added: "We don't pick up the day after we left him at the end of the series proper, we pick him up as if as much time has passed for him as has passed for the rest of us.

"It's been wild - he's been relocated from Miami to a tiny town in upstate New York, so the clothes are heavier and the colours are more subdued.

"That helps to remind me that things have changed - or I could just look in the mirror to realise that time has passed!

"It's not an experience I've had, nor one I imagine I will have again, to revisit something I spent so much time with after so much time away - as much time away as I spent doing it."

Hall said there's around five weeks left of filming and confirmed that the new season will land on Showtime in the US on 7 November.

Dexter producer Clyde Phillips has previously said the upcoming season will be a second shot at getting the ending right.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: "This isn't Dexter season nine... this was an opportunity to write a second finale for the show."
