While there is no Gavin & Stacey Christmas special this year for us to get excited about, people will know that the show is regularly binged over the festive period.

So it's no surprise that people are noticing something from the BBC programme that they didn't know before: namely that Miss Trunchbull from Matilda plays the role of Smithy's mum.

Taking to Twitter over December, people shared how absolutely baffled they were. With one writing: "Okay so today I found out that the actress who played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda also played Smithy's mum in Gavin and Stacey."

Another added: "Wtf how have I only just found out that Pam Ferris (Smithy's mum in Gavin and Stacey) is Miss Trunchbull in Matilda?"

A third commented: "Just seen on TikTok that Smithy's mum in Gavin and Stacey also played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda?!?! I'm literally SHOOK."

You may recognise Pam, now 72, from a number of other classic films and TV series.

She starred as a Headmistress (again) in 2009 Christmas film Nativity! and as Mrs Claus in 2013 flick Saving Santa.

Pam also featured in BBC One's Call the Midwife as sister Evangelina and as detective Laura Thyme in genteel ITV drama Rosemary & Thyme.

She was also Aunt Marge in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, who the boy wizard memorably caused to balloon and drift off into the sky at the start of the film.

If you want your mind to be blown that little bit more, it's worth telling you now that Johnny Depp was in The Vicar of Dibley. Boom.

Depp agrees to attend the party.
BBC/Comic Relief

The Pirates of the Caribbean star made a cameo appearance in The Vicar of Dibley in 1999 for a Comic Relief special, titled 'Celebrity Party'.

The episode sees wise-cracking vicar Geraldine (played by Dawn French) hold a bash with a number of pals, and invites Johnny and a number of other big names to the 'do.
