Dr Caroline Muirhead was faced with a horrifying realisation when her fiancé confessed that he had murdered a cyclist and buried the body so that no one would ever find him.

Caroline is the focus of Netflix’s Should I Marry a Murderer? which looks at how she helped the police find the body and ultimately convict her fiancé Alexander ‘Sandy’ McKellar.

Shortly after McKellar and her got engaged he admitted that he had struck a cyclist whilst drunk driving and with his twin brother’s help, he had hid the body.

The Netflix true crime doc includes some fairly shocking clips where Caroline had been secretly recording McKellar to help the police with their investigation into his murder, having reported what he told her to them.

Amongst these is an audio recording, recreated by Netflix in the documentary, which shows her moments away from being caught by her killer fiancé, only to be saved by a Deliveroo order.

Dr Caroline stayed with McKellar to help the police with convicting him and secretly recorded him

McKellar was arrested along with his brother in 2020, but was completely unaware it was his fiancé who had reported him to the police.

She continued to secretly record him for years until he was eventually sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2023 for culpable homicide and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Speaking about her decision to record them Caroline was critical of the police, implying that she had been pressured into doing it.

She said: “They never said ‘you must record,’ but it was heavily insinuated that the first one was so helpful.

“And they’d say, ‘You must have more information, they must be talking about it. You’re with them all the time.’

“The police were doing surveillance on them the whole time. I didn’t have any mental health support; they said I wasn’t allowed any because it could compromise the case.”

She ultimately filed multiple complaints against Police Scotland but they were not upheld.

Shocking moment in the documentary showed her almost caught by McKellar

Speaking in the Netflix doc, Muirhead recounted how she recorded him whilst he would talk about the case.

She said that one night McKellar was speaking about the case and explained: “It occurred to me, if I’m able to record some of the stuff Sandy is saying, I’ll be able to help the police and might be able to even record a confession so it could be over and finished.”

The woman, who is a professional pathologist, was playing chess on her laptop and decided to open the voice recorder on it, saying he’d ‘have zero idea’.

After pushing him about the incident, she ultimately recorded him saying ‘it was my life or his’ about the incident.

Caroline said the situation became ‘dangerous’ because he started walking towards her and the voice recorder was obviously out on her laptop. McKellar got moments away from spotting that she’d been recording him when her Deliveroo order arrived and she was able to send him away to pick it up for her, saving her from being caught.

Should I Marry a Murderer? is available to stream on Netflix now.
