Bringing another rural paranormal town to life, the Duffer Brothers’ latest series dropped yesterday (21 May).

Executive produced by the Stranger Things creators, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews are the brains behind The Boroughs.

And it’s getting absolute rave reviews already.

Sitting on Netflix now and waiting for you to binge it, the supernatural series was tipped as ‘Stranger Things with OAPs’. The creators say they wanted it to feel ‘equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting and emotional’ and it’s looking like that’s exactly what they achieved.

I mean if anyone’s going to capture ‘heart and horror’ in a TV show, it’s going to be the Duffer Brothers, right?

Starring the likes of Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Denis O’Hare and Jane Kaczmarek, fans are calling it a ‘must watch’.

The Boroughs plot

Set in a ‘seemingly perfect retirement community’ in the Nex Mexico desert, we meet a group of ‘unlikely heroes’.

They must band together in order to ‘stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don't have – time’.

A grieving newcomer is inspired to join thanks to a ‘monstrous encounter’ as they uncover a dark secret. and prove they are far more formidable than anyone may expect.

The Duffer Brothers said to Tudum: “While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching.”

'Creepy good'

The Boroughs has already hit a whopping 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes as fans write on X: “I like The Boroughs on Netflix. It’s giving Stranger Things but with senior citizens.”

Although, Critic Amelia Nancy Harvey did however write on X: “The Boroughs on Netflix is more than just a 'Stranger Things' with OAPS.

“It's a sensitive and heartfelt story about ageing and friendship, which also has some pretty cool monsters in it. It uses supernatural entities to highlight how the over 60s are sidelined and ignored.”

Another wrote: “This show has me completely hooked. It has such a great, new concept.”

“I really dug The Boroughs on Netflix. If you love Spielberg, Stephen King, The Goonies, Amazing Stories, and amazing older actors at their peak, you’ll dig it,” one said.

While others simply said it’s ‘creepy good’.

Although, some do have mixed feelings as they don’t think the later episodes are quite as strong and seemingly ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if there’s no season two.

The Boroughs is now streaming on Netflix.
