Warning: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2.
It seems that some Stranger Things fans have missed a massive plot point in the newly released episodes.
Volume Two dropped on Netflix in the early hours of this morning (26 December) with some fans absolutely slamming it.
But others have been celebrating something they believe finally happened – Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) getting engaged.

Except there’s one big problem, with the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, having to clear things up about the couple’s fate.
Either way, fans are calling the scene the ‘most romantic’ of all five seasons of the show as it saw ‘Jancy’ opening up to one another as they heartbreakingly face death (please don’t kill them Duffers).
Jonathan and Nancy’s heartbreaking scene
So, having shot through the ‘exotic mass’ on the roof of Hawkins Lab, the pair later find themselves trapped inside a room as the place melts around them.
At this point, fans fear they’re simply going to be swallowed up, putting an end to Jancy.
But it seems the couple end themselves beforehand.
They decide to make some big confessions as Nancy tells Jonathan she hates the clash, he admits he hates reading her articles and he confesses to never applying to Emerson (although she already knew this).
And then, Jonathan finally decides to come clean about the engagement ring he’s been carrying around, with their relationship seemingly rocky and weird so far this season.
Except the eldest Byers brother says: “I figure that I have screwed up enough with you that it’d be nice to get something right for once, in the end. Nancy Wheeler, will you not marry me?"
Jonathan calls this an ‘unproposal’, which Nancy accepts as she tells him she loves him and they have one final kiss. In typical Stranger Things fashion, the pair then realise the melting has hardened and they’re safe – for now.

Stranger Things fans’ reaction
Well, social media is pretty divided this morning as fans are majorly confused ‘because the scene seemed romantic’.
“It’s clear they didn’t get engaged, but other than that, wtf is an unproposal? Did they break up? Did they just put the brakes on things? Like wtf happened?” one wrote as other fans said the scene ‘was NOT breakup sounding’.
“I came on to the tl and was shocked… did they break up?????” another baffled fan asked.
And a third even put: “Wait it was a break up scene? I thought they was talking bout living happily ever after?….”
“I thought he actually proposed to her I’m crying,” a fourth said.
While others argued that it was ‘so clearly a breakup if you listened’.

What have the Duffer Brothers said?
Well, social media is pretty divided this morning as fans are majorly confused ‘because the scene seemed romantic’.
Matt Duffer told PEOPLE: “That's a breakup. They are broken up."
The pair have apparently known for ‘a while’ that the couple’s relationship would be coming to an end as they said the team ‘all felt that Nancy needed to end up on her own and be independent and have an opportunity to find herself’.
Matt continued: “I mean, how many people wind up with their girlfriend or boyfriend that they met in high school?”
Although, they did admit that the pair have a slightly more ‘complicated relationship’ than other high schoolers as Ross called it a ‘trauma bond’.
Stranger Things Season 5 Volumes 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix. The finale lands at 1am on 1 January 2026
