Katy Perry shouts ‘it’s a family show’ as her top suddenly breaks off during American Idol

The good thing about not being famous is that you don't ever have to worry about having a wardrobe malfunction on live TV.

Katy Perry almost lost her top on an episode of American Idol and the panel couldn't help but troll her for it.

The pop star, 39, was sat besides her fellow judges Luke Bryan, 47, and Lionel Richie, 74, as they watched contestant Roman Collins, 24, take to the stage with 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World'.

The performer, from Long Beach, California, was the final contestant of the two-hour live episode, competing for one of the judges' four spots in the competition.

After belting out the James Brown banger, the crowd erupted - along with Perry's silver top.

When she got up to cheer, her top suddenly broke, as the singer gasped: "That song broke my top off."

"I guess it is a woman's world," she quipped, as Bryan joked: "Ratings. Ratings. Ratings. Here we come, ratings."

"It's a family show," Perry added, while her fellow judge continued: "Every time you step on this stage you bring everybody out of their seats.

"You literally have the ability to blow the roof of a place."

"Or a top," Perry joked.

Bryan then told Roman, who made the top 14: "You have a style that's so unique, I think the world needs to keep hearing it."

Thankfully, Perry's top was repaired during the commercial break.

As expected, the moment didn't go unnoticed on social media, as one viewer tweeted: "I think Katy Perry just had a wardrobe malfunction!"

Another joked: "James Brown has that effect on people, including Katy Perry."

"Katy Perry with her best Janet Jackson impersonation," a third quipped, referencing Jackson's infamous Super Bowl 38 incident.

"That boy broke the top tonight. THIS IS A MANZ WORLD NOTHING WITHOUT A WOMAN THO," penned a fourth.

Before the show aired, Perry revealed that her silver outfit was designed by Kate Barton.

"If you see a shark you’re left brained, if you see Idol tonight you’re my bestie," the star wrote in her Instagram caption.

Her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, commented: "Glad I could bend that frying pan with my bare hands for you baby."

"All I see is the most gorgeous woman in the music industry," one fan wrote, as a second added: "THE CAPTION YOU'RE SO ICONIC OMG KATY ILYSM."
