Netflix’s The Crash has caused a massive renewed interest in the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old who slammed her car into a wall at 100 mph and killed its two passengers Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan.
Shirilla survived and, despite an attempt to overturn her conviction, was found guilty of two counts of murder and sentenced to between 15 years and life in prison.
The now 21-year-old maintains she is innocent and claimed in her first ever interview, which took place in The Crash, that it was caused by a medical incident linked to her claim she has POTS. This was never confirmed by a medical expert during her trial.
A major aspect of the prosecution’s case however centred around the route Mackenzie took leading up to the crash which killed her boyfriend Dominic and his friend Davion, a route which someone on TikTok has now filmed themselves driving.
Mackenzie’s route was obscure, planned, and designed to not have any witnesses according to the prosecution

In court documents for Mackenzie’s failed appeal against her conviction details are provided that point towards her guilt which were not delved into in The Crash in much detail.
They said that Mackenzie ‘made the decision to drive a car, to drive an obscure route, a route she visited a few days before, and a route not routinely taken by her’.
It continued, saying: “It is noted that Shirilla chose to drive early in the morning, when few people would be around to witness the accident or provide help. It concluded that Shirilla intentionally pressed the pedal to the floor, taking the car to nearly 100 mph and aiming the car at the brick wall.

“The court stated that it could only be speculated whether she intended to kill herself. But it concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Shirilla acted purposefully and intentionally to kill Russo and Flanagan; her actions were ‘controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional, and purposeful.’”
There is one key detail about her route which proves her guilt however, by disproving the possibility that she could have had a medical incident – and the TikTok video proves it.
The TikTok video shows that the road is bumpy and would be nearly impossible to drive at 100mph on if you were passed out
Amber Marie on TikTok posted a video where she drove the route, saying: “Here’s the road she would have been going 100 mph on. It’s not a straight road as you can tell, I’ve been going around curves and it’s very bumpy, that’s the other thing, it’s very surprising to me.”
The comments all came to a similar conclusion to one made in The Crash, that the route proved that a medical incident which caused her to pass out would be incredibly unlikely.
One comment said: “So now seeing how the road wasn’t straight I don’t buy the theory that she past out. Her foot would have came off the pedal.”
Analysis of the car’s ‘black box’ revealed that the accelerator was at 100% the last five seconds before the crash, with Lead Prosecutor Tim Troup saying in The Crash: “Mackenzie drove that car… going up to 100mph this would have taken intense engagement with the steering and controls of that car, just because of the nature of the turns of the road.
“That is not a piece of road that someone could navigate at 100mph while black out.”
The Crash is available to stream on Netflix now.
