Netflix’s The Crash has led to a huge renewed interest in the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old in Ohio who crashed her car into a wall at 100mph and killed two passengers.
The Netflix documentary has also led to some serious consequences for those around Mackenzie, with her dad Steve Shirilla being placed on administrative leave at his job as a teacher over accusations of ‘poor judgement’ following his interview in the doc.
In addition to this, Mackenzie’s friend Rosie Graham shut down comments on her TikTok and released a statement slamming the documentary after receiving major backlash online.
The Crash is not the only documentary to have been made about Shirilla’s case however, with two others being praised online for having ‘way more detail’ on the doc.
An HBO documentary paints Mackenzie in an even worse light than The Crash and viewers online have said it will convince you she did it
Of those who knew Mackenzie before the crash interviewed in the documentary, it’s either her own close friends and family or the family of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan who are spoken to.

On Reddit though one viewer of the Netflix doc posted a comment pointing to this as an issue, whilst also suggesting another doc which raises a key part of the case.
They said: “One thing the documentary did not mention is that McKenzie was at that same road a few days prior, prosecution presented it as her doing a dry run. Not sure why they left this damning tidbit out.
“Also, there is an episode of Mean Girl Murders on HBO that discusses this event. It focuses more on her tik tok instagram obsession and actually interviews people that weren't just her biased friends.”
The episode from season two of Mean Girl Murders titled Under the Influence speaks to several of Mackenzie’s classmates and paints the picture of her drive to become a successful influencer.
Most notably however it features classmate Jaina Maynard stating that she became close to physically fighting Mackenzie on multiple occasions due to her bullying nature.
The documentary also includes details left out of the Netflix doc, including the fact that Mackenzie visited the site of the crash days prior and that the route was ‘obscure' and seemed intentionally picked. Mean Girl Murders also shows that after leaving the hospital following the crash, Mackenzie went to a concert just a month after the crash.
Another Hulu doc about Mackenzie's case, which is free to watch in the UK, goes much deeper than The Crash

If you want even more details on the case an episode of Killer Cases titled Murder on Wheels is the place to go, with one Reddit comment from a true crime officianado saying: “The Netflix doc wasn't bad, but the Hulu one from 2024 was better.”
Another popular Reddit comment on the official reaction thread to The Crash said: “Netflix didn’t cover what truly happened and how this psychopath killer had practiced driving on this road weeks before. Watch Killer Cases Season 4, Episode 12, Murder on Wheels on Hulu; and Mean Girl Murders Season 2, Episode 7 Under the Influence which is both on Hulu and on HBO Max. You’ll see how she had premeditated this!”
Killer Cases also focuses more on Davion’s backstory, and how the crash effected his family.
Killer Cases is available to stream for free on Channel 4 in the UK, whilst Mean Girl Murders is available to stream on HBO Max in the UK. Both documentaries are available to stream on Hulu in the US.
