The Chase star ‘The Beast’ won thousands on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire before he was famous

Mark Labbett is known for his quizzing on The Chase, but he's also been on another hit ITV show.

Mark 'The Beast' Labbett is, of course, best known for showing off his big brains on ITV's The Chase, but years before that, he actually appeared on another game show - as a contestant.

All the way back in 2006, Labbett featured on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? - but somewhat surprisingly, he failed to make it all the way to the top prize.

Despite regularly wiping the floor with quizzers on The Chase, Labbett crashed out of the game show on £32,000.

What would Bradley Walsh say, eh?

He flew through the first few rounds - including the £100 biscuit-based question - but was forced to use his first lifeline on the £2,000 question.

Hanging onto those lifelines is always key, as any Millionaire fan will tell you.

Opting to ask the audience: "Which word describes a piece of knitting with a series of raised rows?"

The answer is 'ribbed', if you're interested, and the audience knew it.

Labbett used up his second lifeline on the £8,000 question: "Which fruit is the principal ingredient of a traditional tarte tatin?"

He decided to phone his mate, master caterer Mo, who was able to give him the correct answer - apples.

However, The Beast was completely flummoxed when host Chris Tarrant asked the question: "The best-selling novel Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow is set chiefly in which country?"

Canada, Denmark, Switzerland and Nepal were The Beast's options to try and win himself £64,000.

Using his last lifeline, Labbett narrowed it down to Canada or Denmark.

And after deciding that the name 'Smilla' didn't appear to be of Danish origin, he plumped for Canada, which was incorrect, with Denmark being the correct answer - something I reckon Labbett will remember for the rest of his life.

Hard lines, pal.

Still, things didn't turn out too bad for the 55-year-old who is now a household name following his appearances on The Chase.

The quiz lover hasn't just turned up on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? however.

Labbett has also appeared on Channel 5's now defunct quiz BrainTeaser, Countdown and BBC One's SUDO-Q.
