Heartbroken Friends’ fans have said one particular scene ‘hits differently’ following the tragic death of star Matthew Perry.

The 54-year-old actor, best known for playing Chandler Bing in the long-running sitcom, passed away at his Los Angeles home on Saturday (28 October). And fans of the show say this Central Perk couch scene has taken on a sadder meaning since his death:

Perry shot to fame after landing a role on the show, starring alongside David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow as the sitcom skyrocketed to become one of the most watched and beloved TV series of all time.

In the clip, Phoebe (played by Kudrow) comments that the ‘six of us’ haven’t all been together ‘in such a long time’, to which Chandler’s on-screen wife Monica (played by Cox) replies: “What are you talking about? We’re all together right now.” At this point, Rachel (played by Aniston) pipes up to point out that ‘Chandler’s not here’.

The joke is obviously that Monica somehow managed to forget that her husband wasn’t present, but following the sad death of Perry this weekend, Friends' fans have taken to social media to say it ‘this scene just hits so differently now’.

Another commented: “Aw, man, this hurts.”

While someone else said: “Oh goodness, so incredibly sad.”

A fellow Friends’ fan added: “Ugh. I’ve never been so sad about the death of a celebrity, till now. I truly feel like I lost a friend.”

Over the weekend, Perry’s devastated family confirmed the sad news in a statement, saying: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother.

"You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

Tributes have flooded in for the late actor, including a joint statement from Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, along with executive producer Kevin Bright.

“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing,” they said.

“We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well.

“He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”

They added: “This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”
