New Gogglebox family defended after viewers make complaints

The mother and son duo have already gained fans who are coming to their defence against trolls online

Viewers of Gogglebox have come to the defence of the newest stars on the show after some trolls shared 'cruel' comments online.

Recently, viewers said goodbye to Gogglebox icon, Stephen Webb, who first appeared on the show back in 2013, and his husband Daniel Lustig-Webb, who announced their departure from the show last week.

And last night (15 September), Elaine and Seb from Forest of Dean were welcomed to the sofa and watched a number of thought-provoking films and TV flicks from the week, including Welcome to Wrexham, Love & Death and Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory.

But despite Elaine and Seb having only featured in one episode as of yet, fans already had a number of unwelcome comments online.

Elaine and Seb are the newest pair to join the Gogglebox settee.

One person wrote: “Not a fan, I’m afraid.”

Another said: "Might be lovely ppl. But it’s a no from me," while someone else said: "Double nope."

Some called the duo 'annoying' and 'absolutely terrible' while someone else said: "One word - dreadful."

But thankfully, some Twitter users were on hand to hit back at the 'cruel' unjustified comments as one user said: “Why are people coming on here to be so cruel? It’s their first week. They will see this.”

And another backed them up, saying: “People… it’s a bit of fun telly. Just something to watch to relax you into the weekend after a busy week. If you’ve got nothing nice to say, how about you just keep it to yourselves.

"Welcome to the Gogglebox team Elaine and Seb."

And some viewers were extremely welcoming of the new additions to the show, with one tweeting: “Liking them already, can’t wait to see more of them on the show.”

Another said: "Liking Elaine and her son Seb. We’re going to get on," while a third said: "Really liking these two, so can't wait to see more of the mother & son duo on the screen."

And a fourth said: "I liked them, I think they'll be a great addition to the show."

The pair come as replacements for Stephen and Daniel, who decided to hang up the remote earlier this year.

Stephen and Daniel recently announced their departure from the show.

Announcing the pair’s departure, Studio Lambert, the creators of Gogglebox, and Channel 4 released a statement which read: "After a brilliant and illustrious time on Gogglebox, Stephen and Daniel have decided that now is the right time to explore life beyond the sofa and leave the show.

"As one of the original Goggleboxers, Stephen has entertained the nation with his hilarious quips since the show first started in 2013, sharing his opinions on the best and biggest TV events of the last ten years.

"We would like to thank him and Daniel for being utterly brilliant contributors to the show, and we wish them well with their future projects."

Stephen also confirmed with a statement of his own on Instagram, which read: "After careful consideration, Daniel and I have decided we will not be returning for the new series of Gogglebox.

"We feel the time is right to move on and explore other opportunities."
