South Park has returned to TV, and in typical fashion, has already managed to cause a huge scandal with its racy humour.
The TV show’s 27th season premiered this week following a hiatus ended by inking a $1.5 billion deal with Paramount to produce 50 episodes over the next five years – and some fans are convinced the episode must have been made in just '48 hours'.
The episode takes aim at Paramount, particularly Donald Trump’s lawsuit against them and their cancellation via CBS of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Trump, however, is the main target of their ire with the episode centring around the idea of the President suing the town of South Park over their refusal to put a reincarnated Jesus Christ in their schools.
The episode centres on Trump threatening to sue South Park because of Jesus (Paramount+) At one point in the episode, Trump is shown in bed with Satan sporting what can only be described as a tiny penis. And the South Park episode has resulted in a furious reaction from The White House.
A spokesperson for The White House decried the ‘hypocrisy of the Left’ and went on to say: “This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.
“President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country’s history – and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump’s hot streak.”
When asked about the controversy at San-Diego Comic-Con, co-creator Trey Parker simply said they were ‘terribly sorry’ followed by a deadpan stare.
Trump was shown in the episode sporting a tiny penis (Paramount+) The episode itself was released within 48 hours of the Paramount deal leading fans to notice they already had jokes in the episode about it.
Trump sues South Park for $5 billion in the show over their refusal to allow Jesus in their elementary school.
Members of the town prepare to fight back but Jesus himself urges them to settle, saying: “You guys saw what happened to CBS? Yeah, well, guess who owns CBS? Paramount. Do you really want to end up like Colbert?”
Another fan quoted this, posted a meme of people chaotically rushing, saying: “Matt and Trey after getting $1 billion and gathering everyone to make a South Park episode in under 48 hours.”
One fan posted the scene to X (formerly Twitter) shocked that the episode references both Paramount and Colbert.
South Park is well known for their tight turnaround on episodes to keep things relevant - with the team being able to make an episode in a number of days (via Slate) - as creators Trey Park and Matt Stone claim they don’t know what next week’s episode will be yet.
Last week, Late Night with Stephen Colbert was cancelled in a move that many have speculated was politically motivated due to his criticism of President Trump, however, CBS said in a statement it was a 'purely financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.'
Paramount also agreed earlier this month to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit with Trump after he accused the network of editing an 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris to 'tip the scales in favour of the Democratic party' - which they denied.
This has led to widespread criticism of Paramount, claiming they are attempting to appease US government ahead of a huge merger, according to NBC News.
This is due to the fact the company is set to be sold to Skydance Media in a mega deal which has since been approved by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the BBC reports.
