*Stranger Things spoilers ahead*
The creators of Stranger Things have made a promise to viewers for the rest of the last-ever season.
Stranger Things 5 volume one dropped on UK Netflix last night (27 November) as the gang face off against Vecna (previously Henry Creel). And it didn't take long for viewers to spot a viral fan theory that's been eight years in the making.
A scene in the first episode all but confirms that Will Byers (played by Noah Schnapp) is secretly gay and that the series may be laying the groundwork for a Will and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) storyline. Will walks in on Robin (Maya Hawke) and Vickie (Amybeth McNulty) kissing and runs out in a bit of a panic. It made fans point to a later moment when Robin seems to Will accept his sexuality.

While we will have to just wait and see what happens with that storyline, it appears the Duffer brothers have already told fans what not to expect in the next two volumes.
“I’ve said this before: The show is not Game of Thrones,” Matt Duffer told Variety.

“I’m hoping it surprises people. But there’s no Red Wedding, if that’s what you’re asking.
“That would be depressing.”

Across the first four episodes of season five, Will attempts to take advantage of his connection with Vecna to foresee the villain’s next targets and help protect them.
Later, he experiences a powerful vision of the 'hive', where Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) and other children are being held, and realizes it’s something Vecna never intended for him to witness.
Once Vecna lets him go in the closing scene, Will has a vision of an attack on Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Robin (Maya Hawke), and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) as they try to rescue the children drawn in by Vecna. Then, without warning, everything around them abruptly freezes.

Matt also said about Vecna having more memories in volume two: "Yes, that’s what we call our new Russia storyline, because it’s very few characters.

"They’re kind of isolated off on their own, Max and Holly. We’re very happy with how it integrates with the other storylines."
Over on X, however, the new season has received mixed reviews so far, as one person penned: "The acting, the effects, the pacing, the editing, the story, all just jumbled and weird like no way that was the majority of the last season of Stranger Things.
"Just the most random, nonsensical, watching another show type s**t i've ever seen."

A second wrote: "#StrangerThings5 is… odd. The show really struggles with its large cast, and most get only a few truly meaningful things to do.

"The plot feels like it barely advances, and there’s a weird lack of momentum. Maya Hawke kinda acting circles around the rest."
Meanwhile, another viewer disagreed: "Stranger Things manages to feel fresh & new while paying homage to countless 80s classics, it finds that perfect mix of sci-fi horror & comedy, the cast are spectacular across the board, the characters are well written and the storytelling is both exciting & heartbreaking 9.5/10."
Stranger Things 5 volume one is out on Netflix now. Volume two will release Christmas Day, and the finale releases New Year’s Eve.
