Man buys mystery reptile egg to hatch and see what's inside

YouTuber BioLife certainly hit the reptile jackpot with this one

A man who purchased a mystery reptile egg box was left 'amazed' after watching them hatch.

YouTuber BioLife took to the platform earlier this month (7 May) to show his subs what it was like buying 'a random reptile egg' that he watched 'over the next 60 days'.

The content creator - who likes to make mini documentaries on the reptiles and amphibians in his home - went viral with his first video, as viewers were pleasantly surprised with what hatched.

Before he did anything, however, he used the torch on the back of his Google Pixel to check if the eggs were fertile or close to hatching.

"So the best way to do that is to use a phone torch technique," he explained.

"Basically, using the torch from the phone to shine through the egg and check for any life.

"When you're doing this with the eggs you have to be super careful not to damage them or drop the eggs while doing this.

"When shining the torch through the egg. you can see there's definitely something in there but I can't tell what.

"I can see shapes some bright redness, which basically means there is something in there for sure and it's 100 percent fertile.

"So I checked the egg that was on its own and this one was a lot different.

"Shining the torch through you can see there is a body or a tail pretty much ready to hatch at that point.

"It wasn't red it was the colour of whatever is inside this egg."

Now, after waiting for the egg to hatch, the YouTuber soon discovered that the tiny reptile was in fact a morning gecko, which was initially thought to be less than ideal.

They have a life span between 10 and 15 years and can grow out to 3.5″ and 4″ in length.

It takes around eight to 10 months for it to fully develop.

"It basically means it's an all female species that reproduce without males," he said.

"That means these geckos stimulate eggs just by being near other morning geckos or sometimes completely by themselves and pop out clones of themselves over and over, pretty much until the end of time."

Despite initial concerns, the reptiles have been responding well to their new environment, consisting of a small terrarium, living off crickets and flies.

All in all, he has been pleased with their development so far.

"Well I've seen no problems at all with the geckos and hopefully it stays that way," he concluded.

"It really is amazing how confident these geckos are considering how small they are.

"They don't mind me picking them up at all and when I feed them flies they don't run away either.

"So that's the journey over I've learned a lot from this video and I hope you have too

"From looking through eggs to hatching and then building their tank it's been an amazing experience."

At the time of writing, the video has over 270k views and users have been loving the mini documentary.
