Altra Experience Flow 3 and Wild 3+ Review: Built for Comfort, Control and Ground Connection

Both trail and road versions in the Experience range offer a comfortable running solution in a super shoe dominated market.

The Altra Experience range enters a super shoe-dominated market stacked with wicked heel drops, paper-thin materials and ridiculously loud colourways - enough to overwhelm anyone who isn't a seasoned marathon runner.

While those shoes are helping world records get smashed to pieces, not every runner is trying to break the two-hour marathon barrier. That's where these shoes come in.

Altra says the Experience range is designed to work with your natural biomechanics rather than relying on massive foam stacks and carbon plates. After a couple of weeks testing both the road and trail versions, I could see where they're coming from.

How did I test them?

I prefer hitting the trails when I'm not being put through the meat grinder of a marathon block, so I tested the trail shoe across a variety of terrain up to 10K, while using the road shoe to keep the miles ticking over on the tarmac.

I only had the shoes for a couple of weeks before writing this, so I can't accurately judge how they'll hold up after 250 miles. What I can say is that I gave them a proper run-out, and if you're in the market for an all-rounder that isn't going to give you any gyp (that's discomfort for our US readers), then these might be worth a look.

Altra Experience Flow

I'm a big fan of the colourway these came in. The shoes are a dream to run in if you’re out for an easy run - your toes are literally cruising in business class with their wide toe box, a rareity in the shoe rotation these days.

They've got a real premium upper that feels great on foot, and while they're not the most responsive shoe out there, they've got enough spring to give you some pop when you want to pick up the tempo.

For me, they're the perfect sunday easy-run shoe. The cushioning is soft without feeling overly mushy, and I can see myself racking up plenty of miles in these.

They're not meant to be a super shoe, but they still feel light on foot which is exactly what you want when clocking up slower mileage.

If you're after something highly responsive, these might not be entirely for you. But if you're a casual runner looking for comfort and reliability, I'd highly recommend them.

Altra Experience Wild

The first thing you'll notice with these again is the roomy toe box, and for some runners that alone will be enough to win them over. Your feet aren't going to get screwed up in the Altra Experience Wild 3+ - they're roomy, comfortable and built for exploring on the trails.

The mesh upper is water-repellent while still breathable, and although the cushioned tongue isn't quite to my preference, it’s not intrusive or bulky so adds to the feel.

The upgraded Wild 3+ comes with a Vibram Megagrip sole for tricky surfaces (

I ran these across dirt tracks, forest trails and hills, and they absolutely eat up those types of terrain. The upgraded Vibram Megagrip outsole feels dependable, while the ride gives you an assured ground feel when the terrain gets dicey.

The trade-off is that they don't have the same fast, rock-hopping feel on descents I get with the Hoka Speedgoat. Instead, they offer a more controlled ride that made me feel less likely to roll an ankle.

There's a reinforced toe bumper for protection, but no rock plate. That means you'll still feel sharper stones underfoot, although the upside is a better connection to the earth.

I'd class them as an all-rounder trail shoe. They don’t feel like they’re built for speed, hurtling down a technical descent, but if you're after lightweight comfort, stability and plenty of room when you're smashing up the trails, this trail shoe is a solid pick.

Verdict

The Altra Experience range isn't trying to compete with the carbon-plated rockets you dust off for a marathon start line, and that's exactly its strength. Both shoes prioritise comfort with the signature boxy toe, sensibility and give you a plugged in connection to the ground beneath you.

The Altra Flow 3 is a no nonsense shoe for the casual runner. (

The Flow is an excellent everyday road shoe for easy miles, suited to casual runners who don’t need thrusting to a finish line. The Wild 3+ takes a similar philosophy onto the trails, offering control, connection and a lightweight ride when tearing up the dirt and gravel.

If your goal is comfort rather than chasing PBs, the Altra Experience range delivers exactly what it sets out to do at a competitive price.
