Amazon has announced that it will soon stop supporting Kindle models released in 2012 or earlier.

In emails from the online retailer, affected customers were told specific devices will no longer receive updates from May 20, 2026.

That means owners of affected devices, such as the Kindle 1st Generation (2007) and Kindle DX (2009), will not be able to purchase, borrow, or download additional books from next month.

However, you will be able to keep reading books you have already downloaded.

It's worth noting, if you have registered or factory reset your device to sell, the Kindle will no longer be functional.

The news comes 18 years after the first ever Kindle launched and an Amazon spokesperson confirmed the reason behind the decision is because 'technology has come a long way in that time'.

So, which models will be affected, and how can you prevent losing access to your library? Find out everything we know below.
