McDonald's axes 'awful' product after issuing response to customer complaints

People have been left unimpressed with one particular product

McDonald's has decided to axe one of its products after a flurry of complaints.

The fast-food restaurant has made a U-turn on one of its newest products, after it introduced the idea to try and 'innovate and improve' earlier this year.

If you're a regular at Maccies, you'll know that the fast-food giant likes to often switch things up when it comes to the menu, with the latest change being the addition of a range of festive Grinch-themed products.

But you might have also noticed that the chain has recently switched out the plastic lids on its hot drinks for eco-friendly paper alternatives instead.

Think paper straws, but lids instead. Yeah...

Anyway, according to The Sun, the new environmentally friendly option has now been scrapped due to customer feedback and concern over people 'scalding' themselves.

One staff member told the publication: “The paper lids weren’t secure enough and they were falling off while people were drinking - meaning they got burned and covered in coffee.”

While another said: “One thing we kept hearing was that coffee was leaking out.”

In a statement, McDonald's told LADbible: “We’re constantly listening to customer feedback, and we continue to innovate our packaging just like our menu. Last year we moved to moulded fibre McCafe cup lids as part of our journey to 100% of our packaging being made from renewable, recycled, or certified sources.

"However, on this occasion the innovation didn’t meet expectations and customers told us they weren’t satisfied. Our goal remains firmly in place, but we will be temporarily returning to plastic lids while we find a suitable alternative that performs to the standards we require.”

People were glad to see the return online, with one writing: "Looks like the local McDonald's has seen the light and gone back to plastic coffee cup lids rather than those 'green' crap paper based ones, victory for common sense?"

While another said: "I am so pleased, McDonald’s has finally seen common sense and gone back to plastic lids for the hot drinks."

And a third added: "Have McDonald's finally ditched those awful paper lids?!"

When McDonald's first introduced the lids, they called it 'one of the many steps we're taking towards our commitment to making all our customer packaging recyclable'.

“At McDonald’s we are always looking at ways to innovate and improve," they said.

“Our new moulded fibre McCafé lids are one of the many steps we’re taking towards our commitment to making all our customer packaging recyclable.

“As with any changes we make, the new packaging went through a thorough testing process to collate extensive feedback both internally and externally, allowing us to make any necessary changes ahead of launch.”

However, people were not impressed, with many taking to X to voice their concern.

One wrote: "How annoying are the paper lids on mcdonald’s coffees! couple of sips and the lip hole has disintegrated!"

While another claimed: "The coffee cups are actually dangerous, had one spill boiling coffee all over me a while ago."

LADbible has also reached out to the chain for comment.
