Most of us know by now that there’s just some things that you don’t say in certain situations.
I mean, whether or not you choose to follow the unwritten rule is another thing but still, saying the big B-word at airport security is a bit of a no-go.
The same goes for superstitions around saying ‘Macbeth’ in a theatre or the unhelpful nature of uttering ‘I told you so’ when your pal is heartbroken over a break-up.
And there’s the same on board cruise ships it seems, as one passenger learned the hard way. A guy enjoying a nice trip during the South America-Antarctica leg of a Royal Caribbean cruise made the mistake of saying a ‘banned’ word during TikTok content of his travels.

But while people were ‘feeling sick’ over it, he was just baffled that others don’t say ‘Titanic’ on board.

I mean, surely it’s pretty obvious not to talk about arguably the most famous big ship sinking in history while you’re on a big ship yourself?
Yet he couldn’t believe that it was such a no-go, saying to followers of the unwritten rule: “Who knew that? I didn’t.”
He’d made the awkward error of telling an ‘entire room’ of cruisers at lunchtime that the ship is ‘only 100 feet longer than the Titanic’.

But the mention of the historic ship’s name alone was enough to make people’s jaws drop.
Waiters gasped and fell into total silence as people dropped their knives and forks following the name drop.
And it was only cleared up for the passenger when his mate leaned over to suggest that he should probably jump ship with that category of conversation starter.
He did point out that the cruise didn’t exactly come ‘with a f***ing handbook’.

While that’s fair enough, we can see why chatting about the Titanic might make people a little uncomfortable.
But TikTok users said their fascination would be too strong to not talk about it while onboard a ship.
One said: “I'm sorry if I'm going on a boat, I'm talking about Titanic and OceanGate.”
As a second added: “Not being able to talk about the Titanic would definitely ruin the experience for me.”
While a third quipped: “Is the Titanic thing for cruises the same as like Macbeth for theatre?”

'Number one, you’re not supposed to talk about the Titanic', seems to be a common suggestion for the unofficial ‘handbook’ for passengers.
