It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas, especially when there are deals to be had on festive breaks.

And this year, Brits are flocking to a place that's been dubbed 'the best Christmas market in Europe' by travel bloggers, with flights and accommodation for just £89.

Every year, thousands of travellers flock to Latvia’s capital of Riga in search of that festive feeling - and they’re not disappointed.

Open from December to January, the Old Town Christmas Market has been dubbed ‘a magical experience’ by visitors and just one scroll on TikTok, it’s not hard to see why.

Blanketed in snow, visitors have said the town has a ‘wonderful Christmassy atmosphere’, as the annual market is adorned with twinkly lights and filled with festive music. Traditional market stalls sell everything from local crafts to homegrown treats such as roasted almonds, gingerbread, and smoked meats cooked over a roaring fire.

When it comes to last-minute Christmas presents you’re in luck, as there are plenty of handcrafted gifts to choose from, such as Latvian honey, silver jewellery, and traditional wooden toys.

If you’ve had enough mulled wine, it’s also a good chance to sample the country’s national drink: black balsam. It would be rude not to, right? The kids won't be bored either with fairground rides, an onsite petting farm, and the chance to meet Santa.

The market has received hundreds of rave reviews on Tripadvisor too with many recommending the destination. One happy traveller wrote, “You must visit the Christmas market in the Cathedral Square where you'll discover stalls, gluhwein tasting, stunning Christmas decorations, and lights.”

Another visitor agreed, as they described the markets as ‘magical’. They wrote: “Wandering around the old city streets was a magical experience. There were four inches of snow on the first night of our visit. With Christmas markets around every corner and decorated trees with dustings of snow, it made our trip very memorable.”

A third user simply wrote: “It feels magical, like a place you'd find in fairytales.” Well, there you have it.

How to book cheap flights to Riga’s Christmas markets

To secure the cheapest deal, you’ll need to fly from one of London's airports on Monday 2 December and return on Wednesday 4 December. The trip includes a two-night stay at the four-star Bellevue Park Hotel Riga, which has also received hundreds of positive reviews.

If you’d rather spend a weekend in Riga and don’t mind spending a little extra dosh, the cheapest deal costs £119. You will fly from one of London's airports on Saturday 7 December and return on Monday 9 December. If you really want to splash out, there’s also the option to stay for three to four nights from £149 - still a pretty decent deal. Just make sure to hurry, as TikTok has caught on.
