It's the time of year where we all start dreaming of warm weather and holidays and for any fans of Thailand, there might just be a cheaper alternative that's closer to home.

Considering what's going on in the world right now, travel plans look set to be affected for some time, with Iran's blockage of the Strait of Hormuz continuing to drive up fuel prices.

So while lots of us might choose to simply stay in the UK this summer, others will be desperate to experience the combination of hot weather and clear waters that are something of a rarity in this part of the planet.

If you've got a spare £60 up your sleeve, then that might well be enough to get you to a certain location, which is growing in popularity as people discover the scenic sights and sizzling 30 degree summers that await them on the Balkan Peninsula.

Where is the ‘Thailand of Europe’?

It's located in none other than Albania.

Wizz Air is offering flights in the next few weeks for around the £60 mark, although you could get them even cheaper if you're willing to get up at the crack of dawn.

That might well be necessary anyway considering the chaos that's affecting a lot of European airports at the moment, ever since the new Entry/Exit System (EES) was introduced.

It's Albania's impressive Shala River where the similarities with Thailand perhaps begin, as it takes travellers through the stunning Albanian alps, where thrill-seekers can enjoy activities such as zip-lining, snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, and rambling.

TikTok user @olam281's footage captured the attention of millions online, as they dubbed Albania a 'hidden gem in Europe', and it seems as if a lot of viewers were in agreement.

One wrote: "I've been to Albania multiple times. [It's] my favourite country of all time, and I've travelled quite a lot. 10/10 would recommend to everyone."

Another follower commented: "I THOUGHT IT WAS THAILAND."

You can get to Albania from pretty much every airport in the UK and considering nearly everyone has visited the Greek islands on their holidays over the years, it seems a surprise that far fewer have headed to its neighbouring country.

A different social media user, @Elisolidum on TikTok, called the location the 'most underrated country in Europe', adding: "You've got mountains, beaches, stunning villages.

"For such a small country, Albania comes close to having it all. It's also one of the most affordable countries I've ever travelled to, so it's just perfect for budget travellers and backpackers.

"Every day was a pure adventure...there are so many cute villages to explore and things to discover."

It's affordability also appears to line up with Thailand, as you can get yourself a pint of beer for less than £2 in a lot of places, so just make sure you enjoy it responsibly, and a swim in the unfamiliar waters after several drinks should probably be avoided.
