Self-checkout user left stunned after claiming machine added $8.5 billion charity donation to order

These days we're always having to deal with the prospect of turning down tips or charitable donations whenever we make a payment in a shop.

There's perhaps nothing worse than pressing a button not to tip your barista as they stare you down while handing over your coffee, or refusing to round up your bill by 15p to give a little extra to charity.

Depending on the type of person you are, or how well off you are, you might well not mind a few extra pounds going to charity here and there.

However, one extra generous shopper in the US was left with the shock of their lives after noticing that they'd somehow been billed for an $8.5 billion donation to Red Cross.

They exposed their bill in a viral Reddit post that has now been deleted, joking that they 'just wanted a hot dog' when they completed their order at the convenience store chain Circle K.

The Canadian convenience store chain has recently rolled out automated checkout kiosks for customers to use but the shopper exposed yet another reason why artificial intelligence is still a risky business after noticing an $8.5 billion charge to the American Red Cross at the bottom of their bill.

Just in case they had a spare $8.5 billion hanging around in their massively oversized wallet, there was even an option to pay with cash as well as card.

Although the original Reddit poster suggested that it was likely an AI 'hallucination', which is when the model generates false, misleading, or completely fabricated information and presents it as a fact, they were no doubt double-checking their bank account in the days after to make sure that they didn't have a sudden and very serious debt.

American Red Cross might well be disappointed to miss out on the very generous donation, considering it reportedly doubles their annual income, but they will no doubt understand why the transaction couldn't be completed.

Perhaps they ought to do a fundraiser like everyone else seems to do these days, only this time tagging Elon Musk to see if he's got any spare change.

Naturally, the people of Reddit had a bit of a field day in the replies, with several of them speculating how this might have happened.

One joked: “Would you like to round up to the nearest billion for charity?”

Another posted: “My daily transaction limit is $2B", while one joked that the original poster was a 'broke ass'.

“A billion here, a billion there, sooner or later it starts adding up to real money,” replied another.

One poster came up with a more helpful suggestion, writing: “Looks more like someone put their phone number into the donation screen rather than the membership screen.

Another suggested that 'it could be an area code and number'.

Whatever the reason, the poster will just be hoping that they're not $8.5 billion worse off, but if their claims about it being an AI hallucination are true, it just goes to show why we shouldn't be putting all our faith in the machines just yet.
