The internet has improved daily life in innumerable ways, but undoubtedly one of the best things it has done, is vastly increase the quantity of animal videos in our lives.

And just when you think you've seen the cutest thing you will ever see, a beagle with a possum on its back wags its way into your life and takes the gold medal.

In itself, the sight of a possum hitching a ride on the happy beagle's back is extremely cute, but the cuteness is only enhanced with knowledge of the sad subtext.

You see, the beautiful beagle in question recently lost an entire litter of puppies. Meanwhile, the possum baby was abandoned by her mother. As such, when the pair crossed paths near Hamilton, Australia, it was perfect timing.

The Moyle family, who own beagle Molly, said the pair had become inseparable.

Speaking to Nine News, Elle Moyle said: "They're an unlikely pair, and I think that possum thought Mol was her mother and vice versa.

"They've been inseparable ever since."

However, it would be difficult for Poss (they've decided to call the possum Poss) to keep up with her new adopted mother and the Moyle's expansive cattle property, so she has taken to jumping aboard Molly's back, and if anything, Molly seems happier with her there.

Sara Moyle told Nine News: "It's certainly uplifted her mood, they both needed each other I think so it's been a fantastic relationship."

This fantastic relationship isn't without its obstacles though. Being completely different animals, they have completely different lifestyle. So while Molly would like nothing more than running about in the garden all day, with naps interspersed in between, Poss is nocturnal and fucks off up a tree to sleep all day.

It's a bit like being in a long distance relationship really, in that they sleep at different times and can't see each other for long periods.

But despite such hurdles, Molly makes it work, waiting faithfully for her best bud to wake up.

Sara said: "Molly just sits under the tree where she's sleeping and just waits for her."

If you come across a sweeter love story this Valentine's Day, I don't even want to hear it.
