Footage recorded in Limehouse, in the east of the capital, shows a group of youths congregating by the canal, with one girl lowering herself down and swinging a kick at the pair of swans, which appear to be mating.

A man with a large stick can then be seen approaching the group of 10 or so in a bid to stop them kicking the birds, but then a boy in a cap runs into shot and pushes the man into the water, before riding away on a scooter and shouting 'have that'.

Police are now trying to identify the youths involved in the unusual series events.

Responding to the video on social media, Metropolitan Police Superintendent Andy Cox said: "Awful viewing. Animal cruelty is an indicator of many other vile behaviours and a tendency towards other forms of violence.

The RSPCA is also investigating the incident. It wrote on Twitter: "If anyone has further information on these individuals, please contact us on 0300 1234 999. Thank you!"

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told LADbible: "At approximately 14:15hrs on Saturday, 27 June police received a third party report of a man assaulted in Limehouse Basin, E14.

"Enquiries into the incident, including to identify those involved, continue. No arrests.

"Anyone with information that could assist police is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD4621/27 June."

Earlier this month police in London began a hunt for a jogger who kicked a cygnet in the head.

The incident took place in Richmond Park and police said the suspect was 'a white male, about 60-years-old, 5ft 6in, grey hair, wearing black running shorts and vest'.

The baby bird was taken into care at The Swan Sanctuary, but despite the best efforts of staff, he sadly passed away.

In a Facebook post, the sanctuary said: "Firstly we'd like to thank everyone who sent well wishes for this tiny little guy.

"Despite our staff working with him around the clock his injuries were just to great for him to overcome and he passed away this afternoon. If you have any information regarding this incident please contact 07920 586546 and quote reference 0705738/20."
