US rapper Coolio, known for his hit record Gangsta’s Paradise, has died at the age of 59. 

His lifelong manager Jarez Posey, announced to US media this morning that he was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor of a friend's house in Los Angeles. 

The exact cause of his death is still unknown, however Posey told TMZ that the paramedics suspected he had suffered a cardiac arrest. 

Coolio started out in the music industry in the 1980s but secured his legacy in the hip-hop world in 1995 when he released Gangsta’s Paradise.

The track has just passed a billion streams on Spotify and Coolio, whose real name is Leon Ivey Jr, won a Grammy for the Best Rap Solo Performance in 1996. The track was also featured on the soundtrack of the movie Dangerous Minds.

The Grammy-winning American rapper had a net worth of $1.5 million (£1.4 million).

Coolio had a career most could only ever dream of. He recorded eight studio albums as well winning an American Music Award and three MTV Video Music Awards.

He was also touring music right up until his death, and performed in Texas just a few days ago.

Friends in the industry have expressed their sadness and respect for Coolio. Vanilla Ice, who the artist was touring with just last week, said on Twitter: “I’m freaking out, I just heard my good friend Coolio passed away.”

Hip-hop sensation Snoop Dogg also paid his respects saying: “Gangsta's Paradise. R I P.”

He also shared a picture of the two on the set of a music video for a track they collaborated on in 2006 called Gangsta Walk.
