Harrowing true story of crime committed by killers confirmed to be subject of Netflix's newest season of Monster

Harrowing true story of crime committed by killers confirmed to be subject of Netflix's newest season of Monster

The Menendez brothers' case remains controversial to this day

Netflix is back with another harrowing series made by the creators of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan broke streaming records in 2022 after detailing Jeffrey Dahmer’s gruesome murders between 1978 and 1991.

It reached one billion views in its first 60 days of streaming and only four other series have achieved such a milestone.

Now, coming later this year is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second instalment of the anthology series following the two brothers who shot and killed their parents in Beverly Hills.

Take a look at the terrifying trailer below:

Lyle and Erik Menendez fatally shot their mum and dad in the family home back in August 1989.

During trial, the brothers claimed they were subject to years of sexual abuse as a reason for killing their parents.

Prosecutors, however, argued that their motive was money-related.

45-year-old José and 47-year-old Kitty Menendez were hit by 15 rounds of bullets and police thought the killings looked like a mob hit.

On the night of the murders, the brothers said they went to see a movie and took a stop off to get 21-year-old Erik's ID.

They said that on returning home, they found their parents' bodies before police responded to a 911 call from the siblings.

Months after the murders, the brothers spent a reported $700,000 on luxury cars, clothes and watches.

Meanwhile, the brothers one-by-one agreed to go to therapy and the pair confessed on tape to killing their parents.

Despite prosecutors arguing that the pair did it for inheritance, the brothers said they killed in self-defence.

The brothers alleged the father had molested them for years, detailing graphic descriptions of what they claimed happened.

Lyle said he confronted José about being molested as a child days before the murder took place.

He claims he took his father's angry reaction as a death threat.

The case went on for seven years and the courtroom was televised for large parts.

The brothers were eventually found guilty of murder and were sentenced to life without parole.

Having watched the trailer, viewers can't wait to give it a watch, as one person commented: "I did my research paper on this case for my psychology course, and couldn’t sleep for weeks after learning more and more about the depth of it all. Traumatising."

"This phone call recording gave me chills, can’t wait to watch this," a second said.

"Epic promo!! Simple is good. I'm sold without even seeing any footage. Excellent work to the team that put this one together!" a third wrote.

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny will play José and Kitty Menendez, while Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch will star as brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez.
