If you ever wanted to know exactly what a can of diet coke would do to your body now's your chance.

A new study has delved into the negative effects one can of Diet Coke can have on your body in just one hour.

Although marketed as a healthier alternative to normal Coca-Cola due to the lack of sugar, there is still plenty that Diet Coke can change in the body.

Pharmacist Niraj Naik, who is best known as The Renegade Pharmacist, has made a minute-by-minute guide on what the drink does to your body, and the effects might disturb you.

Don't worry too much though, as with almost anything which poses health risks it's largely fine as long as you practice moderation.

Studies suggest one drink of Diet Coke can leave you thirstier than before.

Past studies into the effects of drinking Diet Coke and other soft drinks packed with artificial sweeteners have suggested it can promote weight gain, despite containing no calories or sugar at all.

As reported by The Mirror, Naik outlined how within the first 10 minutes of drinking a can of Diet Coke, an impact has already happened your teeth and body.

He explained: "The phosphoric acid attacks the enamel in your teeth, while the artificial sweeteners like aspartame hit your system.

"Aspartame may trigger taste receptors and trick your body into thinking it has just processed sugar."

20 minutes after drinking and your body switches into 'fat storage mode', with Naik warning that a can of Diet Coke can trigger insulin just like drinking a normal can of Coca-Cola.

Studies have found a link between artificially sweetened drinks like Diet Coke and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

40 minutes in and the combination of caffeine and aspartame is producing a 'short addictive high', not unlike a hit of cocaine.

Chugging too many artificially sweetened drinks can make your brain overstimulated and leave a person mentally exhausted.

After an hour, the body will be craving a sugary treat while the person will be hungrier and thirstier than they were before.

Having not actually consumed any sugar, the body will be more likely to go for another drink or some sugary food, prolonging the unhealthy cycle.

Pharmacist Niraj Naik recommended reaching for a more nutritious drink than Diet Coke.

Luckily for people wanting to watch their health one can of diet coke isn't going to pose much risk, so you should be fine as long as you don't just chug it like it's going out of fashion.

As for what an energy drink does to you when you drink it, your heart rate and blood pressure will quickly rise making you feel more alert.

However, after an hour you'll start to feel a sugar crash and it'll be 12 hours before your body has worked through all that caffeine.

A spokesperson for Coca-Cola said: "Everyday, millions of people enjoy Diet Coke around the world.

"The ingredients in Diet Coke and all of our drinks are perfectly safe to consume and we encourage people to enjoy as part of a balanced lifestyle."
