A kind-hearted boy is carrying out odd jobs to raise money to buy a gravestone for his best friend who tragically died following a battle with cancer.

Twelve-year-old Kaleb Klakulak and best friend Kenneth 'K.J.' Gross, also 12, had been best pals since the second grade. Sadly, their friendship was cut short when K.J. died in May.

He had been diagnosed with leukaemia as a child and had to undergo surgeries and gruelling chemotherapy. He died due to congestive heart failure, the Detroit News reported News reported.

K.J. was buried in a family plot at a cemetery in Detroit, but his grave has been left unmarked as his family aren't able to afford a headstone.

So, little Kaleb decided to set himself up as an odd job man and is now raking leaves and collecting bottles to help raise funds to buy the gravestone. He's also set up a PayPal account to take donations. He set himself a target of $2,500 which has already been reached, any donations made from now on will go towards the Singleton family as they get back on their feet following K.J.'s death.

Singleton was forced to quit her job as a school cafeteria workers, so she could remain at K.J.'s bedside as his health deteriorated.

Kaleb wanted to give K.J.'s mum LaSondra Singleton, who gets called 'San', the cash before Christmas.

He told the Detroit News: "I love Ms. San. I was sad she couldn't afford it. I wanted people to be able to find (K.J.'s grave) when they went to see him."

Kaleb's fundraising efforts have been helped by his mum Kristy Hall, who took to Facebook and posted: "If you have bottles or odd jobs that Kaleb can do to earn money he would greatly appreciate that.

"I really think this is a great thing for Kaleb to focus on and help him with his healing as well as K.J.'s mom, who misses her baby and has to visit an unmarked grave."

Speaking about their friendship, Singleton told the news outlet: "K.J. used to come home every day telling me about Kaleb, 'Mom, you've got to meet Kaleb; you've got to meet Kaleb,'" she said.

"At the end of the school year, I finally met Kaleb. Then I met his mom, and we all just clicked.

"He and K.J. were so much alike. They were kindred spirits; they were like brothers. Even their facial features were alike - the glasses and everything."
