Warner Bros and DC are working on an origin story of Batman villain The Joker, according to a report in the Hollywood online news site, Deadline.
Martin Scorsese has been signed-on to produce the feature and it will be directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips, who will co-write the film alongside 8 Mile writer Scott Silver.
Jared Leto will play the character in the forthcoming Suicide Squad sequel and Gotham City Sirens, but it is believed that a different actor, younger actor will be handed the role - although with Scorsese being on board you probably can't rule out Dicaprio being given the nod.
"The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-80s Gotham City that isn't meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese's films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy," Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr writes.
Here's how Twitter reacted to the news:
The whole point of the Joker is that he has no set origin story https://t.co/f63wzK8Zpc

DiCaprio must be playing the joker? DiNero is his father? Where does Joe Pesci fit in?

Okay I'm hopeful for the Joker movie. If they are casting a new joker and Scorsese is suppose to produce then all is not lost.

Martin Scorsese on board to produce a 1980's Gotham City crime film based on the origins of the Joker? You have my attention... #TheJoker

Yes, let's pretend Jared is a non aging man and need a "younger actor" to play the joker in a solo movie also let's ignore he has an Oscar.

i hate the idea of joker having an origin like, we know HOW he was made but it's so dumb for him to be like "oh look at him having a bad day

that Joker film is supposed to be an origin film? oh god
- Terence Johnson (@LeNoirAuteur) August 22, 2017
An origin is totally unnecessary for the Joker at this point. And as in prev RT, The Dark Knight made it clear he's scarier w/out one.

With Heath Ledger's role in The Dark Knight being so iconic, whoever ends up playing the lead will have big shoes to fill.
