If you're hoping to go on holiday but money's tight, we've got the place for you.

A little-known Italian destination known as the 'Maldives of Europe' is now available to visit for less than £30 - that's the equivalent of a round down the pub.

Granted, you're going to need accommodation and beer money too, but considering hotels start from £55 a night or you could rent a beach house with a group of mates, that's still better than most package holidays.

Plus, the beach area hasn't earned the nickname for nothing - visitors have shared rave reviews of the white sand, crystal blue seas and warm, sunny weather.

While the Maldives is undeniably stunning, you're looking at paying a couple of grand for a short visit.

But at the Maldive del Salento Pescoluse near Palombara, Italy, you get a similar experience but at a fraction of the price.

Right now, Ryanair flights from London Stansted to Brindisi - the closest airport - are as low as £12.99.

Though this varies throughout the year, if you plan ahead, you can easily bag a bargain.

There's plenty to do once you're there. Other than chilling on the beach, boat rides are available for snorkelling or scuba diving, and there are plenty of bars to enjoy in the evenings.

And you don't have to just stick to the Maldive del Salento, as guests can also explore nearby coastal towns including Otranto and Santa Maria de Leuca.

The beach has received thousands of reviews on TripAdvisor, with one writing: "This beach is just beautiful!

"Although it was in the middle of July it didn't feel as crowded as other beaches we went to. The water is clear and beautiful and the sand nice and white."

Another said: "The beach goes on for miles. Sheer perfection. Loads of Lidos with well behaved people.

"Although busy it’s orderly. Clean sand, crystal clear waters. Amazing day on a perfect beach."

While there are a number of reviews from people claiming it doesn't compare with the Maldives, one person chimed in to set the record straight.

"I think people misunderstand the reason for the title 'Maldives of Italy'. This isn't to do with the beach, but the clarity of the sea water," they explained.

It's all about the crystal blue sea.

"And for that reason, it is true. The sea is so clear, blue, warm and very shallow. You can walk out far and feel nothing under your feet but soft sand. It's to die for!

"The beach itself is relatively narrow but there was plenty of space when we visited in mid September.

"If you are planning to spend the day, either fork out for sunbeds/umbrella on the beach or bring your own umbrella, as the sun in southern Italy is HOT! Highly recommend."

So there you have it - stunning beaches, hot weather and a great atmosphere. And all that with flights as low as £12.99? Sign us up.
