Someone Has Written A Script For Ringing In Sick At Work

Someone Has Written A Script For Ringing In Sick At Work

The script has been put together for people who aren't sure what to say to their employer when they're genuinely poorly

A script has been put together informing people of the best approach when it comes to ringing in sick - if you're genuinely ill.

But, we suppose it could also be used if you're hungover, sleepy, fancy a day off. Let's be clear: we aren't advocating that, though.

First of all, it all boils down to how you're feeling but don't forget those around you. People might not want you sitting close by coughing and spluttering all over their shoulder (especially not in these Covid times, that's for sure).

So, more on this script. Student Job has put it together and advises that people say something a bit like: "Hello [name], I'm phoning up to say I woke up feeling pretty badly today. I think I am coming down with a fever and moving around makes it feel worse."

Before adding: "I have already booked a doctors appointment as I'm unaware if it is contagious or not. I should take the day off so I can rest and hopefully can come back tomorrow. I will answer emails from home and will rearrange any meetings for a later date. Thank you for your understanding."

On a serious note, your actual sick policies should be helpfully and clearly explained somewhere in your contract of employment.

It is widely accepted however that you should notify the relevant person at least 30 minutes before your shift begins.

If you're feeling crap the day before your shift is due to begin, it's believed that the best course of action is to send an email. You may then need to ring someone up.

One of the main things is not to delve too deeply into what is wrong with you. No one needs to know the nitty gritty of your stomach bug thank you very much.

Moving on to something many of us have probably experienced - hangovers. So, if you're worried about going to work after a night on the booze - chances are if your employer knows they're not going to be overly thrilled.

However, Student Job says that the best thing to do if you're fearful that you'll be accused of being rough is to try and get someone to cover your shift if that's possible. This, in turn, will soften the blow when it comes to not being in.

The publication also tells people not to over dramatise your condition. This includes no groaning, coughing or sneezing (unnecessarily) when you really don't need to. Your boss will probably be on the other end of the phone rolling their eyes.. mine would be anyway.
