The photographer behind the famous New Year's Eve shot taken in Manchester back in 2016 has just released a new, 2023 shot - and people are saying it's equally as brilliant.

Freelance photographer Joel Goodman went viral in 2016, after his image taken on the streets of Manchester, on New Year's Day in 2016, became a sensation overnight.

At the time, it was likened to a 'beautiful painting' and now, seven years on, Joel delighted social media users when he shared another New Year's Eve scene from Manchester's streets.

Joel's OG photo, taken on Wells Street, also depicted the chaos of New Year's Eve.

The 2023 version was taken outside Manahatta bar on Deansgate and features crowds of revellers standing outside, an ambulance whizzing by in the background and a woman - sat on the pavement - comforting her friend who appears to be in tears.

They are sitting in front of an advert that reads 'Happy New Year 2022' and next to them is another woman, holding her high heels in her hands, in conversation with a man clutching his mobile phone.

And people on Twitter are calling the photo a 'work of art', with one person commenting: "Another classic image Joel! Happy New Year to you."

Meanwhile another said: "Another classic snap. Your pics always have so much to see."

And a third added: "A perfectly composed masterpiece!"

While a fourth wrote: "This is art."

And a fifth said: "Manchester renaissance photography during the Christmas period remains undefeated."

Joel's OG photo, taken on Wells Street, also depicted the chaos of New Year's Eve, with police officers wrestling one man to the floor, another reveller strewn across the road with his belly half showing, queues of taxis and crowds of partygoers in the background.

After the photo went viral, Joel told the Manchester Evening News that he just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

“There are street photographers who regularly make art of these sort of scenes. There are lots of different ways to photograph the same scene," he said.

“It felt like there were fewer people out in the city centre for New Year’s Eve than in previous years, but there was a lot of aggro.

“Mostly, a shot like that is just about being in the right place at the right time - I just happened to be in the right spot."
