You wouldn't be alone in thinking that once you pass a certain age, the idea of slogging it out at the gym or on a treadmill is a distant memory.

Most people when they hit their 50s, 60s and beyond swap the dumbbells and early morning classes for sleep ins and relaxing.

But one woman in her early-70s is here to show you that you're never too old to turn your life and body around.

Joan MacDonald, from Ontario, Canada, was in her nursing home feeling 'angry, frustrated, arthritic, and extremely overweight'.

Her doctor told her she would have to increase her medication if she was going to continue her sedentary lifestyle of lazing around and eating whatever she wanted.

Joan's daughter Michelle, who is a yogi, competitive powerlifter and professional chef, decided to step in and help her mum make a change and become a new woman.

That was when the elderly woman was 70 years old. Three years later, Joan is an absolutely stacked beast who has gained an army of fans around the world and now inspires people to make a change. The 73-year-old has nearly 850,000 followers on Instagram.

In one of her posts, Joan said: "I never let people take photos of me because I couldn't accept where I was and yet, I also couldn't seem to change.

"It was a very tough place to be, and I stayed in that place for a very long time."

Joan now regularly posts photos of her lifting weights and bashing out epic workouts and people can't believe that she's in her early-70s.

She says that people can be exactly like her if they have the motivation to change the way they do things and strive to be better each day.

The 73-year-old posted a before and after photo of her transformation and drove home the idea that to achieve looks like this you need to work on it every day.

She said: "Three years ago I began this long, slow journey and now I realize that there really isn't any end to it. Each day I move in a direction based on my choices. Each month is a new milestone. Each year I seem to have changed so completely I think I can't change any more and yet I do.

"At this point, I truly realise that we are limitless. At any moment we can make a decision to change. No matter how difficult or challenging life is, we must remain steadfast in our aim and keep inching forward.

"When I got started I never imagined I'd be where I am today. I just wanted to get my health back and get off my medication. Each door we step through leads to another door and then another.

"I hope you all keep choosing to grow! To learn to love yourself, take the best care of yourself, and dare to dream and love with your whole heart again."
