Man Who Was Accidentally Paid 286 Times His Salary Resigns And Disappears

Honestly, as if anyone else wouldn't have done the same thing.

A man in Chile has legged it after he was accidentally paid 286 times his normal salary.

The banking bungle occurred in May, with the man promising his boss that he would return what was overpaid to him.

But instead, he quit his job and vanished.

Let's be real here, most people would probably do the same thing.

The company accidentally paid around 165,398,851 Chilean pesos instead of his usually salary of 500,000 pesos.

For those playing at home, that's about AUD$260,000 (£148,000).

He normally gets paid about AUD$790 (£450) for a month's worth of work, so we can only assume he is now doing a Scrooge McDuck and is swimming in a pool filled with money and gold.

This guy, probably.

According to Chilean financial news website Diario Financiero, the man worked at Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos (Cial), a company that is one of the largest producers of cold cut meats in Chile.

When human resources noticed the major banking error, Cial reached out to their employee to discuss the mistaken payment.

Diario Financiero reports that the man agreed to go to his bank the next morning to sort out the repayment, but did not show up to work.

His employers were unable to contact him, despite trying multiple attempts to call, text, and WhatsApp the man.

That was their last interaction with their newly rich staffer. However, on June 2, he resigned from his position via his lawyer.

Now Cial is trying to claw the money back by and have launched legal action against their former staffer.

"He was informed and clarified that this money did not correspond to the payment of any service," Chilean legal documents claim, as per Diario Financiero.

The company is now chasing their former employee for misappropriation of funds with the hope of recovering some of the lost money.

No arrests have been made so far.

While being paid 286 times above your usual salary would be a massive win for anybody, this employee was being paid just over Chile's minimum wage.

According to Take-Profit.org, Chile's minimum wage comes in at $US 434 ($AUD 628, £356) per month.

The man's monthly pay works out to be $US 545 per month ($AUD 790, £450).
